I am a Shotokan man myself but train regularly in Wado when i am in the UK, enough to recognise crap when I see it. I have to say that Wado seems to have suffered in a lot of the dojos I have seen from getting reduced to the worst sort of rubbish. On the flip side I have been lucky enough to train with some excellent Wado Karateka.

Jim, I agree. I've found a good club and organisation so I'm happy but much of what passes for Wado Ryu nowadays is a sadly watered down version of something very special!
I started training in the early 80's and have to wonder sometimes what the hell is going on!!

I see that nobody knows about Taekwon-do I.T.F......this is the first style of Taekwon-do.....here you can hit the face like in box and the kicking technique is the same as in the Taekwon-do W.T.F where only kicking technique is allowed in fights.
So i say that you should relly go for Taekwon-do I.T.F because its much more evolved with the kicking technique as in KARATE or Kickbox

I know about ITF. In my very small opinion it is weak.

You seem to confuse sport tkd with tkd. One small item, WTF does allow punches. ITF allows punches too. Difference? WTF you need to hit solid to the body in Olympic Sparring to get a point. ITF you hit that hard and you will be DQ'd.

As for Karate v TKD...

I have been in both up close and personal and know what it is like to be at national level at both.

TKD, in my very small opinion, was much harder to compete at that level.

Uriel,
What made it tkd harder to compete at high level than karate?

Just interested.

kicking technique and stances. everyone seems to be 'stiffer' in karate. now I am over generalizing here since there are a lot of styles of karate. when i went from fighting tkd to fighting karate it was watching my opponents being really light on their feet to seeing them be really heavy. Their techniqes themselves were given in a slower way and sometimes *note sometimes* some techniques were not as "powerful".

Not trying to bash. This could very easily be because I started fighting in one then later on in the other so it might just be it was harder to learn to fight than it was to apply fighting that I have learned.

Boxing for the striking, and kickboxing for the kicking, how hard was that to figure out?
Footwork and being light on your feet is absolute key to victory.

I would try going to both schools to check them out before I commited to either. Alot of people like to say "it's not the style, it is the teacher" I would say this is most likely true. But also Jiu Jitsu practitioners are generally very large (muscular) and this can be a hinderence in WTF TKD where most of those that excel at the art are very small in frame or stature as this makes them faster and hence top competitors (this is not always the case). Though this is not always true from what I have seen at tournaments and at other schools it often is. Karate and ITF tournaments though tended to have larger people and tried to use less kicking techniques though they were still present in force. This may have just be the schools present but possibly not. Though I would reccomend the Karate over the TKD they would both compliment you Jiu Jitsu very well and you would be advised by me not to choose the school because of what they teach but rather the quality they teach it with.
