I am thinking of starting a class concentrating only on self-defence. I would want the opinion of instructors here on how to train students to be prepared for real life situation. Please post your opinions here. Remember this is a discussion, not a debate. Thank You.

Let them experience actual fighting.

Teach them how to deliver properly.

Teach them how to counter proper delivery.

Teach them how to counter the counters.

Let them do it live and be able to experience actual fighting, with proper delivery and defense. Let them do so through ALL ranges in which fighting can occur so as to prepare them for such things.

Experience is worth more than gold.

My friend and coach Tony Blauer said, "In a real fight, experience is something you get shortly after you need it."

The goal of training should be to safely replicate what happens in real confrontations or portions of what happens in real confrontations. There are several ways to do this.

You can role play and practice diffusing altercations and setting up protective tactics.

You can practice many repetitions of responses to aggression/ attacks, escapes and improvisations against cooperative and progressively resisting training partners.

You can gear up and beat on one another full blast.

I personally think that there should be a balance between these three to gain optimum benefit for Self Defense training. How you divide it up is a personal preference.

Real life situations.....

Learn the mindset of survival;

Learn how and where to strike your attacker so you can either escape or take your attacker out of the equation.....

Learn if taken down to the ground how to get back up....

Learn how weapons work, how they are really used...how they inflict damage the most and how to counter attacks....

Learn as soon as you grab or are grabbed all posibility of escaping, countering are greatly degraded.....

Learn that when there is one there is more than one....always plan on it...when you fight and when you survive....

Learn to use weapons including improvised ones...ie screwdrivers.....

Learn that when you take the attack to your attacker you ruin his game plan......

Learn once on the offense stay on the offense....

And learn that to win you need to hurt your attacker....seriously.

When all said and done and you survive...do not say anything to the cops your preist or your wife....go home...be quiet...do not feel gulity and if you have to say anything to anyone...tell only your lawyer.
