In most TKD matches what can you strike with and where to?
Are shin kicks allowed?

We do karate and kick boxing so TKD is new to us we have sent out to get the full rules. Hopefully they will get here soon.

do you know the organisation affiliated with the event? It is most likely to be the WTF, but the ITF and other orgs have differing rules. Here is a link to the rules thread, look under WTF TKD.

ITF does not alow shin kicks, nor are the shins a legal target area.

All kicks with the feet & all hand techniques are allowed. The target area is the front of the body, above the belt, with the cutoff to the back defined by the shirt seam.

From my experience, many of the open TKD point tournaments have a similar target area, but they only allow punches with the forefist, as the sole hand attack.

Yes, the forefist preference is quite common. Usually backfist strikes are also awarded points, but spinning backfists are usually not counted, for the reason that they are called "blind techniques." IMO if used properly they are not blind techniques, since you should look before you strike anyway. There is also a problem with judges scoring hooking punches, they tend to see them as uncontrolled punches instead. They are, technically, legal however.
