Would you say it's worth it? - 08/19/05 05:13 PM

I relatively new to karate (1 year), but I have recently begun thinking about whether or not I should ever compete (meaning fight). I've never been to a MA competition, so the only exposure I've really had to a competition and what it's like is the stuff I see on TV or in movies (and that's probably not a very accurate representation!). So my question is, is it worth it? Is the experience so awesome that every martial artist should at least try it? And what were your own MA competition experiences like? Any feedback would be great!

I would not say that it is critical, but it can be a good experience. I competed in point sparing tournaments for several years (no, I never won), and it was interesting to see other styles in action.

I also made some friends, and got to talk to other instructors about martial arts. It can be fun. Be aware that politics in some competitions can take the fun out of it, but that doesn't mean you have to care.
