Hello

I know that this has probbly been asked elsewhere on this forum, but i would value all of your opinions on this.

I have decided to take up a martial art, for self-defense/exercise purposes, but my only options in the small area where i live are Wing Chun, Tai Kwan Do, Karate, and another form of kung fu (but i really can't remember whats its name was (kenpo i think?)).

The teacher seems like a good teacher, and i have met a few of his students before, and they tell me that he is very good.

(I know that one style isn't better than the other, and its a matter of training but...) Which would be better for my purposes? (ie Self Defense/exercise/whateverelse)

When i say self defense i mean it (i live in the hillbilly capital of the world, and a redneck drunk on moonshine is a force to be reckoned with!! LoL )

Thank You,
Jordan

P.S. Sorry for the poor quality of this post, but i've been in a car for 3 hours!
and i'm rather tired.

Hi, there are are several posts of a similar nature on this resource so try having a look at some of the others answers that people have given. For my money, everyone should base their martial arts training on a percusive art or style ie: one where raw impact is the primary mode of attack. This gives a solid self defence basis and is technicaly less demanding than styles that emphasise technical locking/holds and throws etc. However I would hasten to add that for self defence purposes people MUST cross-train in a grappling art. Whatever you chose, the most important aspect initialy is the teacher, a great Art or style taught badly is useless. If you have received good reports of the instructor from people who's opinions you trust then give it a go. Experimentation will teach you what suits you best, what you enjoy most and what style or more importantly what teacher has the most to offer you. If you would like a brief run down on what the styles that you have mentioned would involve then just ask. BTW you edit your posts by clicking on your post to read it, then by clicking on the middle symbol of three located just below the top of the post, beneath the title.

Regds and hope this helps
Mr V

Thank you for your help, and yes, the grapling would seem like a good idea, from what i've heard.

Thanks Again
