GT's 'Dead or Alive' - Online - 12/09/06 06:17 AM

G'day All,

First of all Sorry, But i don't think I've posted an intro as yet (I'm lazy), Just google "drgndrew" I'm sure there's something out there in cyberspace.

"Dead or Alive" is one the most recommended text's on self protection available. If you are interested in RBSD the the chances are that you would have heard of it or at least heard of Geoff Thompson. Regardless, it's a text I highly recommend for any library.

Fighttimes.com (e-mag) have been reproducing the text (with permission) chapter by chapter over the last year. I thought members would appreciate a link where you can view all current chapters.

http://www.fighttimes.com/magazine/magazine.asp?columnid=14

Chapter eleven has only just been added. It's also worth having a look around the e-mag it has a fair bit of info available.

I know this sounds a bit Spam-ish but i don't spam. I honestly believe this will be of great interest and assistance to many, I simply want to share. If Mods find this post inappropriate for any reason feel free to remove it, no worries.

Enjoy

Geoff Thompson really is a fantastic RBSD author and has more MA teaching qualificatins to list. For a great, informative read, try his autobiography Watch My Back - tales of his 10 years on the door and how he adapted his karate to work in real life situations.

Re: GT's 'Dead or Alive' - Online - 04/26/07 01:26 AM

drgndrew, thank you for posting the link to GT Dead or Alive.

I began to read Chapter Eight - Hands and Elbows. When I came to the left hook I read,

Quote:

For maximum power push your right hip forward and slightly to the left before the strike. As you throw the left fist toward the target, pull the hip back to its original position and push your left hip sharply across and to the right, following the path of your punch.

Well this didn’t sound right to me but a lot can get mixed up with just words so I stopped reading and just looked at the pictures. What I saw was poor body mechanics.

Nitpick time, I think the fox, cat analogy is bad. I fully understand the point GT is trying to make but I think he could use a better analogy. I mean dogs kill cats lots, dogs never kill foxes without humans helping.

I plan to read more and will post what I think of it.

Chapter Thirteen – Throws

Quote:

As a singular attack, the throw can often quite easily be neutralised, even by a strong novice.

True if you suck at the clinch and throwing. But if you’re a decent grappler you will own a novice even a strong novice. This statement is bull imo.

Quote:

Clean throws are not always possible unless the thrower is expert.

Clean throws are not always possible EVEN if the thrower is expert! But you don’t have to be an expert to make throwing a high percentage move for you.

Quote:

It is the non-grappler's quicksand because, unlike kicking and punching range where you may move in and out at will, once you're in grappling range you will very rarely get out of it before the culmination of the fight. So it is best avoided.

Well if you train in grappling then you won’t have to worry about avoiding the clinch now will you, duh.

I couldn’t read anymore so I just looked at the pictures again. He uses the same crappy gi grip for all the throws.

Ok I had to read the last paragraph.

Quote:

A word of caution: never deliberately seek grappling distance in order to execute a throw. Only attempt to throw if you find yourself trapped with no other options open to you. The element of surprise is pivotal in the execution of a throw: it must be fast and explosive. Neither speed nor force will come without a lot of practice.

This is so wrong on more than one level that it gave me a head ache just to read it. I can’t go on.

Chapter Seven - Areas of Attack

I just scanned quickly through but I did stop to read the nose part.

Quote:

As was formerly mentioned, a severe attack to the nose could prove fatal;

I do appreciate that Drew posted links to this, but I’m done wasting my time reading through it all.

Drew if you feel that there is something that GT wrote that was right on; quote it and I’ll read it.

When are you going to write your own book? You should take your vast knowledge and put it to paper.

I’d like to but I’m a busy guy with a job and family plus I’m planning on starting a business and that will take most of my energy.

Perhaps I’ll start something on FA. Like a new thread could started by me for each chapter or something along that line.

What do you think, interested?

ExCon -

While I agree with you that the nose/fatality comment seems absurd to me as well, the throws article seemed on point, considering the audience he is aiming it to. From the article:

Quote:

In reality their accessibility is dulled by the very high skill factor that is demanded in pursuit of competence.

Clearly aimed at non-grapplers.

Quote:

Grappling, especially to the non-grappler, is unique. It is the non-grappler's quicksand because, unlike kicking and punching range where you may move in and out at will, once you're in grappling range you will very rarely get out of it before the culmination of the fight. So it is best avoided.

Sounds right to me.

Quote:

It goes with out saying that to really get these throws 'off' you will need proper tuition.

Again, aimed at non-grapplers.

Quote:

Neither speed nor force will come without a lot of practice.

Common sense.

And, with no sarcasm, I would be very interested to see member articles on martial arts topics. Myself and a few others (BigRod, Gavin, JKogas, etc) have done so in the past. Jump on in!

Re: GT's 'Dead or Alive' - Online - 04/28/07 11:26 AM

Hi MattJ

Ok I see GT’s point. My point is become a grappler.

Imo if you don’t what to learn grappling, then you’re not serious about self-defense.

Re: GT's 'Dead or Alive' - Online - 05/09/07 11:56 AM

Thanks Drew. We appreciate the updates. I did see this in the article, and wish to comment:

Quote:

Some schools of thought advocate the latter as a first line of defence, advising their practitioners to throw themselves to the floor before an attacker and fight from there. This is about as sensible as telling someone to throw themselves into a fire to get warm. Don't do it. If I could find one word to describe this kind of advice it would have to be [censored]!

While I agree with him that that advice is [censored] for most SD purposes, I have NEVER heard a reputable grappling school that advocates that. I think Geoff may be mis-interpreting BJJ tournament tactics (where this would be viable) with SD. No one I know of in BJJ advocates "throwing themselves to the ground in front of an attacker" in a real fight. I know I certainly wouldn't.

Re: GT's 'Dead or Alive' - Online - 05/09/07 09:45 PM

G'day Matt,

I have to admit i hadn't actually heard that, personally, either, Though i had heard others say they have heard it. ( friend of a friend sort of thing)

At the time DOA was written BJJ was the new unbeatable thing, At the time time BJJ was defeating every one. I can see that some instructors would have advocated going to the ground as a first line of defence. Nowadays they know a little better, the majority agree the ground is a place to avoid in the street. and in general we al understand that sometimes gravity wins so we should know what to do if we get there.

Still with some of the arrogance displayed by a few grapplers ( same goes for some strikers and other experts) it wouldn't surprise me if there's not a school/club out there advocating just that practice. (Not aimed at any one in particular so don't go getting your back up)

PS i still don't feel comfortable posting on the open forum, But I would like to see this thread through.

Re: GT's 'Dead or Alive' - Online - 06/16/07 09:43 AM

First I have to say that while I have never thought about throwing myself to the floor in front of an opponent in a real fight, it’s happened in MMA in the past. I don’t see it as much any more but Jeremy Horn was doing a fair bit of it in his last fight with Chuck Liddell.

But there is a reason for this. 1) Horn was getting beaten around by Liddell. 2) Horn couldn’t take Liddell down. That means, you do what you have to do to avoid getting KTFO’d. Jeremy did and the result was a tactical decision that was based upon specific circumstances, like ALL decisions are made.

I think we have to note the difference between arrogance and confidence. Arrogance is based upon a sense of often unwarranted pride. Confidence is based on proof. Good grapplers believe the things they do because of "proof of results" from what they have experienced.

I believe people should be aware of this.

I know the difference between the two terms. I agree with your definitions except that I would had that confidence is the belief in oneself ( or ones abilities ). whilst arrogance is the belief one is superior to others.

I fully intended to use the term arrogance.
