Excited about my first Tai Chi experience!!! - 04/20/04 12:12 PM
I trained in Shotokan Karate for about 7 years.
I recently visited a Kung Fu school and the instructor invited me for a lesson.
He told me to stand with my arms bent, on foot infront of another.
He gentle touched my arms and threw me...I was amazed. He asked me to try, but I only pulled it off once.
The question I have from this is was this really Chi or physics? (He told me it's all in the mind)...
Can I have that amount of Chi energy in my without training in the internal arts for years?
I tried it again at home on my sister and it worked everytime...I guess needed to relax more instead of being tense.
Warm regards, Lok

While it is great to see someone who is excited about the IMA's (Internal Martial Arts), what you experienced was not this person's chi. Without being there watching his/her alignment and power generation methods) I could not tell what it was that was done to you.
It could have been that he simply had mechanical advantage over you. Secondly, if you were able to move him, I would suggest seeking out another IMA instructor. Begin able to have and keep a peng connection (ground force vector strength) is key to all IMA's. You comments suggest that this teacher
does not understand peng.
Remember it ain't chi. It is movement with relaxed-whole body connection. It is using this connected movement in an explosive nature (fa jin) that 'Seems' magical. If you tell me you general location I can try and help you find someone who can give you the goods of the IMA's.

It's a method of storing and releasing energy in the tendons and muscles of the body against the floor and then releasing it, not such a big deal but can be impressive at first sight.
Glad you enjoyed your first taste of Tai Chi

Darn...I thought it was chi (he didn't tell me so, but) It felt like magic doing it without the use of muscles.
Ah well...
What's the difference between Tai Chi and Qi Gong?

I'm about to ask the question you are all afraid of...
If you can use Chi to heal someone...can you use chi to make people sick or do bad things to them?
If you think it wise not to answer me I'll understand lmao "^_^"

It's Taiji and Qigong or Tai Chi and Chi Kung (same thing different ways of writing) there is Chi Kung (breath skill) Hei Kung (strategy skill) and Nei Kung (internal skill) they are three levels of internal training that are impossible to explain in writing. Their translation doesn't even begin to explain how they are used in IMA. They are taught through a method of "direct transmission" and Chap Sau (hand fiddling) from a top Sifu who adjusts, presses points on the body and after establishing a "harmony of energy" between himself (or herself) and the student can teach in a way that defies words.
This method of relationship and instruction will always be a mystery to outsiders and I can understand and accept their ridicule in forums such as these. When the mind is bright and attentive and the practitioner has the skill and temperament to be able animate a correctly aligned body to deliver a highly skilled movement Kung is the skill Chi is the animation, Hei is the strategy involved and Nei is how deeply embedded it becomes internally.
It's not mystical, human animation can influence others on a subtle, emotional and mental level if they allow it or are unaware of it. Therefore it can affect people in a negative or positive way.

Bossman,
That was a very good post.

Hope you don't consider me in this group. I just get tired of too many 'chi ball' questions.

Do you mind if I use this? Great Line.

No, but it sure looks and feels that way. I can understand people getting the wrong idea about IMA's, I know I did when I was first exposed to some of the Tang Shou Tao Xingyiquan teachers. I am still amazed at those with 'high level skill'. I seem defeated as soon as contact is made.

Well, this post has positively effected me. I will temper my comments more in the future to noobs who have been blown away like I was years ago.
Chi is not something to blast, throw or whatever at anyone, BUT (and this is my big but) there is something and it must be shown and felt to be understood.
Thanks for posting this Bossman.

Hi Scott
No I don't put you in that group and have the odd humorous dig myself. Can't resist it
You're welcome to use anything I say (I've usually forgotten what it was by the next day anyway
Sometimes I just feel that Reiki is the only one trying to be serious on this forum and it can have educational value if we try harder...

I apologise for some of my flippant comments on this forum too.
I always read the serious posts with interest, but some people's posts almost seem to beg for a jokey response.
I will try to be kinder.

Sharon, you have got to be THE most kind and tolerant person on this forum along with Reiki who despite the ridicule shows her mettle with patient informed responses each time.

No kidding. Sharon, I have a healthy respect for you from reading your posts. You are one of the least offensive and much valued members here.
Oh yeah, razzing Reiki is great fun! She is a fantastic sport, and knows her stuff to boot!
