What is Zen?

What is Zen? - 04/11/05 07:28 AM

Zen, zen...what is zen? (for you old ST fans...an allusion to "Brain, brain..").

Like the Catholic Church in America (far from the pope), I am sure that the underdstanding/practice/pursuit of zen is different here.

Is it a mindset...a way of thinking/non-thinking? Does it require sitting meditation? (I think not...that kata is the skillful means used by most in this forum.) Do we have to take it with Buddhist precepts...or can the Dharma take care of itself?

I mean, we can name this particular forum virtual sangha...or not...and it it performs the same function.

What is your zen?

An example of Zen is being able to answer a topic without replying.

[edit] This, is not one of those examples.
