Does anyone study this style of pugilism today? If so, where can someone learn this kind of thing. I do agree with the punch style to a certain extent but I was more impressed with the guard and stance.

The old style pugilism looks pretty neat. If boxing was like that today, i belive it would be better.

Very interesting.

If you watch the first few UFC's, Royce uses a very similar extended hand position.

I have always been a big fan of vertical punches, and use them extensively.

Savate AKA French foot fighting AKA Le Boxxe Francais. I'm think it was developed in France & popularized by their dock-workers. I believe a law @ the time prohibited the use of fists in altercations w/ severe punishment for law-breakers. So I believe a kicking art w/ open-handed slapping evolved to side-step the law. Eventually when others in higher classes took notice of this indigenous fighting art, they allowed boxing-style punches to be added.

Anyone w/ more accurate info?

More accurate info?... As for the art itself, I must admit don't. But as for how to say French boxing in French, I do : "Boxe francaise" (with a little hook under the C, which English keyboards do not have. And in French, caps aren't used for the first letter of a nationality as in English). If you want to put an article before (sounds strange to say "the" French boxing, but French language uses articles much more often than English), the said article would be "la". La boxe francaise.

Sorry for this perfectly useless post, but I just love languages and French is one of my favourites...

I like the vertical punch, I was doing them today on the heavy bag. I noticed they are excelent for short punches when throwing an overhand punch would be slower.

WEIRD. My teacher showed me punching vertical from the start and only to twist when on the nose. Lol i remebr when i first went in and i punched horizontally he kept telling me too many movies....

The good thing with the vertical punch is you cant see it coming, you can easily pentrate peoples guards and i think its faster

I would go with a vertical punch any day it even feels stronger
