Inceasing flexibility - 11/30/08 05:10 PM

I am looking for some stretches to increase my overall flexibility but specifically my hips, shoulders and hamstrings basically to improve my O-Lifting. I am unsure as to what sort of stretches I should be doing for this and for how long. anybody got any good links or stretches they can recommend?

In general, if you feel a stretch and not pain, you are doing a decent stretch. A muscle needs between 90 seconds and 2 minutes of total stretch for any benefit. Any less than 90 seconds is not as beneficial and anything over 2 minutes is no more beneficial. I typically have my patients do 4 sets of 30 seconds. Doing under 15 seconds is not as beneficial.

The best book I've ever read on this subject is 'Streaching Scientifically' by Thomas Kurtz. Check it out if you can.

I couldn't even touch my toes and was stupidly inflexible.

A few home sessions of a 45 min beginners Hath Yoga workout on DVD and now I can now not just touch my toes but put my palms flat on the floor... Not just that, yoga makes you feel GREAT all over physically and mentally.

The Art Of Expressing The Human Body, Bruce Lee, good source too.
