Hello everybody,
I'm sure not everybody are familiar with silat melayu. So, lets me introduce to you guys some of the main silat melayu in Malaysia.

*Seni Silat Gayong .

Seni silat Gayong are among the most practised form of silat in Malaysia. There is almost 20 different styles of Seni Silat Gayong being taught. Among the most popular are Seni Gayung Fatani, Silat Gayong Malaysia, Seni Silat Pusaka Gayong, Seni Silat Gayong Ma'arifat, Seni Silat Gayong Ghaib, Seni Silat Gayong Pancasila, Seni Silat Kegayongan Helang Putih, Seni Silat Gayong Harimau and Seni Silat Gayong Asli.

* Seni Silat Cekak.

Seni Silat Cekak originated from state of Kedah. Once was the martial arts practised by the warriors and the palace guards of the Kingdom Of Kedah espescially during the rule Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Halim Shah II. This fighting art was inherited by one of Kedah's palace knight named Panglima Ismail to Panglima Tok Rashid which was then passed down to Yahya Said. In 1965, this silat was inherited to Ustaz Haji Hanafi bin Haji Ahmad and in 1971, Silat Cekak was registered under the name of Persatuan Seni Silat Cekak Malaysia and Ustaz Haji Hanafi as the Grandmaster. Since 1986, Haji Ishak bin Itam has been appointed as the Grandmaster until now.

* Seni Silat Lincah.

Seni Silat Lincah has been around for hundreds of years but was only known as Seni Silat Lincah in 1963 as Tan Sri Dato' Haji Omardin Bin Mauju became the Grandmaster. Earlier the fighting sytle was known as 'Silat Tarah', however the name was changed to Silat Lincah due to the name 'Tarah' was not suitable. Now, Persatuan Seni Silat Lincah have registered almost 1 million members all around Malaysia and have expended the arts to Europe and other foreign countries.

Actually there are more silat styles that are being practised in Malaysia. The above 3 are among the most practised. Most schools will have these silat classes for the students.

Let me include a few more silat melayu that are being practised in Malaysia. Among them are -

* Silat Sendeng.

Seni Silat Sendeng is another silat melayu largely practised in Johor. Among the most practised sendeng styles are the Seni Silat Sendeng Malaysia. Silat Sendeng Malaysia was founded by Allahyarham Long Mamat and expanded by Allahyarham Haji Hamid bin Haji Hamzah, named this silat by Seni Silat Sendeng Muar. First center under Allahyarham Haji Hamid was born at Sungai Mati, Muar, Johor Darul Takzim. After Allahyarham Haji Hamid passed away on 19 May 1990, his younger brother, Allahyarham Haji Ismail bin Haji Hamzah was choosen to lead Seni Silat Sendeng and replaced as ‘Guru Utama’ (Grandmaster). On 11 July 1992, Seni Silat Sendeng Muar was register by the name ‘Pertubuhan Seni Silat Sendeng Malaysia’ with combining 7 branches around the country like Johor, Melaka, Pahang, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Now, Pertubuhan Seni Silat Sendeng Malaysia has 42 training center in Malaysia and was born at lease 48 an expert instructor.
Pertubuhan Seni Silat Sendeng Malaysia (PSSSM) developed another training center at Kelantan, Sabah and Labuan. Under Allahyarham Haji Ismail leadership, many things change and blaze like ideas and management. Every year PSSSM joins Wajadiri Programme organized by Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) Malaysia like matial art event, course, physical and charity activity. PSSSM never failed to make an appearence at ‘Kejohanan Seni Mempertahankan Diri Kebangsaan’ (National Martial Art Tournement) every year. PSSSM also makes their own tournaments or event like Sendeng Full Contact (Sendeng Sparring), Silat Seni and other activity physically and also for charity.
After 10 years serve to PSSSM, Allahyarham was past away on 22 March 2002. Now, Haji Ismail bin Haji Sa’din be selected and agree by all senior members as the new ‘Guru Utama’ (Grandmaster) from 2002 until now.

* Seni Silat Kalimah.

Seni Silat Kalimah was believed to be founded by Sheikh Abdul in 512 Hijrah or the year 1118. The fighting art was taught to Maharaja Derbar Raja II ( The 9th King of The Kingdom of Kedah) & his family during the old Kedah dynasty, way before the Malacca Empire existed. The silat was secretly practised by the palace guards and knights before it was introduced to the people of The Kingdom of Kedah during the rule of Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin III (1854 - 1879).
Silat Kalimah techniques revolves around the 'solat' movement for the muslim.

* Seni Silat Lian.

Seni Silat Lian was brought to Tanah Melayu by Sheikh Abdul Rahman from Yunan, China in 1897. It was then taught to Awang Daek, a Johor palace guards & Pak Long Mamat, the Muar police district officer. This fighting skill is known as 'Buah Pukul Mersing' as the silat is famous around the mersing district in Johor. Now silat Lian has developt in a few different styles. Among the main are Seni Silat LianPadukan, Seni Silat Gerak Lian, Seni Silat Lian Yunan,Seni Silat Gayang lima, to name a few.

* Perguruan Seni Silat Setiabakti.

Another Silat Melayu that are gaining a lot of attention lately. A rounded form of silat that compremise Pukulan Buah Melaka (empty hand to hand combat), Seni Tongkat (stick fighting arts),women martial arts, Parang technique (machete) and tembung buluh runcing.
The Grandmaster is Mahaguru Dahlan Karim.

HISTORY martial arts of SETIABAKTI

To date has trained over 700 students.

HISTORY of SETIABAKTI martial arts teaching

Originally named as Malay Silat by the late Tok Guru Mat Kelang. He was well knowned by people in martial arts skills and a household name in Kampong Selandar, Malacca and the surrounding villages. The art has attracted the attention of Mr. Guru Ali Rani to study the art from Tok Guru Mat Kelang.

After several years of learning ,Mr. Ali Rani was finally appointed as the teacher to develop and expand this martial arts. He has developed this martial arts among his peers and those around Selandar village.To recognised the teaching of Tok Guru Mat Kelang, Pak Guru Ali Rani named the arts of fighting to Silat Mat Kelang.

In 1970, Guru Dahlan Karim learned Silat Mat Kelang from Pak Guru Mat Ali Rani and diijazahkan as a teacher in 1982. Together with Pak Ali Rani, guru Dahlan Karim and partners have agreed to name the silat Mat Kelang as Seni Silat Setiabakti at the end of 1982.

In 1994, the Pertubuhan Seni Silat Setiabakti have registered and been approved by the Registrar of Societies.After completed learning 10 other silat melayu, Guru Dahlan Karim has expanded Silat Setiabakti to several states in Malaysia and overseas.

Learning the skills and techniques of Silat Seni Setiabakti is SIMPLE, EASY to learn and EFFECTIVE. The techniques were selected from the best of martial arts has been learned by Guru Dahlan Karim
