What are those words, if they have a category, that are misued per:

Chai tea (Actually Chai translate to tea) so this is like saying
"Tea Tea"

PC computer (PC means personal computer-used out of context to mean IBM based machines)
"Personal Computer Computer"

Bo Staff (In martial arts a staff is a quarter stick-bo is the Asian term and translates the same)
"Stick Staff"

Aregent Silver
"Silver Silver"

Can you think of any others?

It's kind of similar to RAS(Redundant Acronym Syndrome) Syndrome.

Runs Batted In (RBI) is often said (or written) RBIs, much to the aficionado's chagrin.

Re: What is it with... - 03/02/09 10:35 PM

Would you rather RsBI?

I always thought that RBI was Run Batted In. Because if someone had 1 RBI then your way it would be 1 Runs Batted In, which is incorrect. So therefore RBIs would be correct for multiple and RBI for singular amount of runs batted in.

I love semantics, best way to waste time.

Re: What is it with... - 03/03/09 05:41 AM

But RBIs is Runs Batted Ins, and that "s" there is wrong.

It is understood that the singular plural would be used if the acronym were spelled out. The extra "s" is just wrong, because the word can't be "ins" in this particular case.

So you would prefer me to say "ARod got 4 RBI in the game today." Is that correct?

No. I'd prefer you to say, "A-Rod struck out in each at bat today", but then I'm a Red Sox fan.

AHEM! From that same article...

"In the USA, "scampi" is often the menu name for shrimp in Italian-American cuisine (the actual word for "shrimp" in Italian is gamberi). The term "Scampi", by itself, is also the name of a dish of shrimp served in garlic butter and dry white wine, served either with bread, or over pasta."

The slate shall therefore be cleaned and the score remains nil to nil (not that it was a competition anyway but HAH! lol)

Re: What is it with... - 03/07/09 12:24 AM

would that be nil-nil or 1-1? Either way I win.
