Did you feel the earth move... - 07/18/07 09:23 AM

After been woken up several nights in a row with my bed moving, I just have not been sleeping so well lately. Lake Natron in north eastern Tanzania has been having several earth tremors which we are feeling some 200km away in Nairobi. I am on the count of two already today....I wish it would stop - I'm not used to this.

Okay...I admit to having a dirty thought reading that topic line. LOL!

I tend to feel tremors more than other folks I know. Though there is little activity in New England, there have been some in Canada (hundreds of miles away) that have woken me from sleep. I recall sitting a the table once, having a conversation, when I felt the table move from the legs up...and no one else did felt the quake. Really weird sensation.

I wonder if those tremors are related to the ones in Japan.

Not that we have been told....and we are a long long way away from Japan.
We have been told that there is some volcano in Tanzania that erupts every 20 odd years or so. Last time in 1988, so due for an eruption soon. So what we are feeling is the magma moving upwards and displacing parts of the earths crust. Makes one feel mighty small when pitted against mother nature.

We've had a couple over the last few years in northern Poland. Everyone was screaming how they'd been lied to in geography class and others were hoping a Russian submarine hadn't explode in the Baltic.

I realised immediately what it was having experienced one or two in the midlands of England.
