http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting

Quote:

A podcast is a media file that is distributed by subscription (paid or unpaid) over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.[1] Like 'radio', it can mean both the content and the method of syndication. The latter may also be termed podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. The term "podcast" is derived from Apple's portable music player, the iPod. However, known synonyms for the word pod are capsule, case, container, hull, husk, shell, and vessel.[2] A pod refers to a container of some sort and the idea of broadcasting to a container or pod correctly describes the process of podcasting.[3] More about the name itself can be found in the History of podcasting article.

Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital audio formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically, using software capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom.

Thats a crap meaning. Its basically a sound file with people talking about some hobby or common interest you can download from the internet. Its a PODcast because the term was coined when iPODs were the portable entertainment device of preference. You can get them about pretty much anything.

Pod Casts, streaming media, Instant messages etc...HUMBUG!!I think CB radios were much more fun way of communicating than all this internet stuff, i know i couldn't live without it now but its just too bland and reliable, my mate years ago as kids had some illegal radio set up where we listened into and talked to 'big rig' drivers in the United States with lots of static interference but it felt like there was distance between us.

You don't have to have an ipod to watch pod casts. Most places that provide them to itunes have their own website as well. One of my favorites is Ask a Ninja. Absolutely hilarious.
