The energy that goes into this plus to have a rhythm that actually sounds like music ...

Came across this a few days ago and thought you might like it. It is a Snare Drum Solo and this guy is pretty good.

Keith Moon - the archetypal insane rock drummer

Dennis Chambers - from my hometown of Baltimore. I met him once at the school where I was taking jazz lessons. It looks like the video is speeding up in certain parts, but no. He really is that fast. He was called "the next Buddy Rich":

Gene Krupa - the man who put drummers on the map. Before Buddy Rich and everyone else. Check the style! Made it hip to be a drummer:

Re: Drum solos! - 08/17/06 02:04 PM

Havent got any links, but IMO the greatest drummer i have seen is Dave Lombardo of Slayer. I remember seeing them for the first time, and the support act had worked up the pit into a real good mosh so heat shimmer was coming off the front of the crowd. Lombardo kicked in with his bass pedals and the shimmers flinched and moved as the sound waves hit them . His drum patterns are complex and unique whilst never losing the driving force and aggression needed in that genre of music. He split from the band back in the early 90's and became a sought after percussionist in other genres as diverse as modern jazz.

another really neat thing I have seen both Killing Joke and Ministry do is have 2 drummers on identicle kits drumming the whole gig in perfect timing together- even sharing drum solos, one stopping as the other takes over mid solo, and never missing a beat. Awesome.

Ahhh....metal drummers. Good one, Cord. I'll be right back.

Carter Beauford isn't metal, but he is awesome. One of my faves, since he plays "open handed" like myself:

I remember this episode ... for real ... but remember it in English.

Cord, I also remember Dave Lombardo of Slayer and even have an album of theirs.

I always remember Bune E. Carlos of Cheap Trick when I was younger where his seat busted and he finished the show standing up.

Believe it or not, I actual even went to a Platinum Blonde concert when I was 14 or 15 that I really enjoyed and the drummer was pretty good. Can't remember the song but he cranked it out and had the sticks spinning in his hands and in the air plus had water or something on the drums that sparkled in the light ... frickin' cool at that age.

I also enjoyed Alex Van Halen and seen him twice, once with David Lee Roth in 1984 and once with Sammy Hagar in 1995. However the hilight was always Eddie Van Halen and his guitar solos ... but that is another thread for another time.

Re: Drum solos! - 08/18/06 03:03 AM

oh I forgot, we should really give a mention to the guy from Def Leppard who lost his arm, then re learned to play using a special kit that allows him to take up the workload with his feet. His drumming is very good, and he sure did display guts, or 'martial spirit' or whatever you want to call it

Re: Drum solos! - 08/18/06 11:03 AM

Def Leppard ... probably my all time favorite group. Rick Allan is great and has accomplished a lot and the band never gave up on them. I seen these guys live in 1999 at Rockfest ... or should I say Mudfest. This turned out to be a disaster as the promotor ended up taking off with the money and never paid all of the bands so many left like Nazareth but some stayed around and did it for free and these included Def Leppard, Sammy Hagar, Loverboy, 38 Special and many others. Also it rained for most of the event and was held at the Edmonton Raceway which turned into one big mud pit. The memories.

couple more phenominal drummers:

Stewart Copeland (the police)

the drummer from 'Yes' and 'Toto' (forgot their names).

Re: Drum solos! - 08/18/06 01:44 PM

Ed -

Stewart Copeland is one of my faves as well. Phenomenal drummer, I haven't been able to find a good link for him.

Yes's early drummer was Bill Bruford, who I have a link for in the first post. Great drummer, and you have to hear his stuff with the 73-74 iteration of King Crimson to really appreciate what he could do. Not the fastest or loudest drummer, but he could play the most outlandish rhythms. Bizarre stuff, but very cool.

Toto's drummer, Jeff Porcaro, was another great one. I *think* he played drums for Sting for a while. Might be wrong about that.

All good groups with good drummers. Grew up on The Police, Yes and Toto. Toto was a really good band but started to get softer as the years went on. After their release of Toto IV in 1982 (love this album), things went soft but they still were okay. They did not have the attention grabbing music like earlier with "Hold the Line" (awesome song), and stuff line "Rosanna" and "Africa". And as far as Yes ... I spent countless hours listening over and over to their hit song "Owner of a Lonely Heart" from their 1983 album 90125. I recently purchased their best hits album.

Re: Drum solos! - 08/21/06 05:59 PM

We all know that the drums are the back bone of any band. They work the hardest (loading and unloading all that equipment), they are the most technical (incredible rhythms), and they get all the recognition...well...they...umm...well they do work the hardest. Did I mention that?

I would listen to Buddy Rich drum than whoever-you-want sing ANY day!

Also, Chad Sexton of 311 is a good mix or rock and reggae drumming. He has good wrists. Yeah, I know that was a weird compliment.

Drummers and singers are in no way as important as the Bass player. we have responsibility for rythm and melody at the same time. we are ther adhesive that holds a band together.

Drummers are people who hang out with musicians, and vocalists are interchangeable (how many bands manage to carry on with a new vocalist?- even Queen sell out stadiums with that guy from Free, he is no freddie Mercury, but as long as the words go in the right order, people dont seem to care)

Bass player wins as a multi tasking heart and soul of any band

Drums, vocals ... okay ... but bring out the guitars and lets rock baby. This kid is good and reminds me of the 1986 movie Crossroads with Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio. Kid plays a lot like Yngwie Malmsteen ... I can even hear some of the same licks in there.

Re: How about guitar solos? - 08/30/06 04:01 AM

when it comes to guitar, there are some awesome choices- Joe Satriani has got to be up there, Rocky George is a much overlooked guitar god, then of course there are the Jimmy's- Page and Hendrix

i always wanted to like Vai, but he got too wound up in 'cleverness' and lost sight of melody for my liking. 'the audience is listening' is his stand out solo track IMO.

Dimebag Darrell absolutely shredded, as did Chris Oliva (both )

Modern times you should check out a new British band called DragonForce. They are part of the 'power-metal' revival (think Manowar and Savatage all over again), and their guitar work is literally breathtaking in places.

For my money though, you simply cannot beat Iron Maiden- Murray, smith and Gers have been responsible for more examples of guitar perfection between them over the last 25 years than any musicians should be aloud to take credit for.
There new album came out on monday, and it is staggeringly good. And as a live band-

I like a good grind as much as the next man but let us not forget incredible guitarists of a different breed. Mr Santana and Mr Clapton have to be in here along with Mr B B King.

Man, you guys haven't even mentioned any of the classical Spanish/Flamenco guitarists out there. Andres Segovia would hand most of the metal guys their leather-festooned asses in a shred-off.

And I'll throw this in there, to make this completely off-topic. One of my favorite pianists, Vladimir Horowitz:

Re: How about guitar solos? - 09/02/06 02:06 PM

All cool stuff. I love musicians that can pull out all of the stops and put on a good show. I tried playing guitar for a couple of years but realized that I'd never been anything grand ... and it was classical so it did not really interest me and finding somebody to teach rock and roll just wasn't available in my small town. I have always wanted to learn piano though and I think sometime in the future I will as I think that I could do well at that. Heck ... you should see how fast I can type.

I thought I'd throw this in here. This is from the movie Crossroads from 1986. It is one of my favorite movies for musicians as it pits Steve Vai against Ralph Macchio. I believe Steve Vai actually did both musical parts for the close ups. This rocks though. For those that don't know what is going on, Ralph has put his sole on the line to save an old blues guitarist while Steve Vai is the Devil's hit man. Enjoy.

Re: How about guitar solos? - 09/03/06 08:27 AM

Steve Vai did the cool 'duel with the devil' finale, but all the rest of the music in 'Crossroads' was a very cool Robert Johnson inspired blues soundtrack written/performed by Ry Cooder. Its s great soundtrack, but infuriatingly, the end shred-off is not on the album.

They pulled this trick with the 'Fight Club' soundtrack as well by not putting 'Where is My Mind' by the Pixies on it.

Its so annoying when they do that stuff
