I did kungfu for a bit and we always practised throwing our kicks and holding them there for a second then only bringing them back down. i guess the focus was on strength. but now im doing muay thai and last night i got taught why not to do that:-) but everytime i throw a roundhouse kick with my right leg now it feels like im trying to use power rather than speed and its frustrating coz my left leg can do it fine

Just a question to investigate TJG, but are you rolling your hip all the way through? In shadow boxing you can start to 'un-learn' this by fully rotating through the kick to reset your guard after doing a spin. I recomend throwing a hammer fist or back fist during this spin, you may only land it once in your life off of the rotation, but that one time will make you happy you trained it and made it a habit. Also remomend a lead leg check while reseting. If you only ever check one counter kick with this habit it will pay for it's self. Good luck, God bless, and Sawadee Krup.
