Worlds Strongest Man in UFC - 01/02/07 03:34 PM

Ive just been watching The Worlds Strongest Man on TV and I started wondering how someone with such a huge ammount of physical strength would do in the world of UFC. The favourites always seem to be the grapplers, but would the usual takedowns, chokes and locks be effective on some of these guys? Just curious.

it would depend entirely on if the 'strongman' had any fight training. Marius Pudzianowski on the polish boxing team, and has 12 years (4th dan) of Kyokushin Karate training, so it is safe to say that his stand up game would be pretty sound, and that being able to chanel such enormous power into good striking technique would make it less than fun to be on the recieving end. on the ground, he would certainly make you work for every arm/leg manipulation, but much of his applicaple power would be diminished by the very nature of grappling.
There has been a South African champion powerlifter who took part in an early UFC and did not do so well, though powerlifting does not create the same high level of explosive strength endurance that WSM training does. In fact, training based around functional lifting (essentialy what WSM do) is rapidly becoming favoured amongst competetive fighters as a tool for applicaple fitness conditioning.
Again though, anyone, of any size, with any attributes will not beat a fighter, if they themselves are not a fighter.

Tank Abbott. While not really a WSM type, he was massively strong with serious striking power. He could annihilate those of similar skill but less strength. However, when faced with someone of a significantly higher skill level, he was beaten.

No, the favourites are a mix of fighters with grappling and striking preferences.

but would the usual takedowns,

Yes, it's more a matter of balance, while that's necessary to lift heavy loads, it's not going to apply terribly well to takedown defense. A someone that athletic with good wrestling training would be able to pick up takedown defense very quickly though.

chokes

There would be some diminishing of the chokes you could pull off, especially if they have good technique. Choking someone from guard when they have very good posture and are very strong is difficult. Triangle chokes might become impossible for people with shorter legs on WSMs who have very large necks, shoulders and triceps, and the same might apply with anaconda and arm triangle chokes which are similar. The key point would be fighting cardio, and if they don't pace themselves properly, after 5-10 minutes they could find themselves too tired to apply their strength properly.

and locks

Technique would have to be bang on, there wouldn't be any muscling locks in on people who are very strong.

In general it will be harder than against an average athlete on some levels, but MMA specific training would make it a lot more difficult to fight a WSM competitor.
