I have had some good developments over the years by practicing kata at medium speed, with continuous motion and without worrying about power. I find that my footwork is faster and smoother, I hit harder and move better than before. My body feels a lot better as well. And, I feel much more relaxed overall. I have found Sanchin especially helpful for this but I do not use ibuki breathing.
