Sai/bo sundry names some tips? - 08/07/09 05:48 PM

Hi,

Last post concerned sai, thought to name some parts of standard weapons and care of wooden ones...if I err, or other thoughts differ please point it out... noticed many students dont know names of parts of their weapons...or I'm just preaching to the choir.

1.Sai- often 3 were carried, 1st one to throw, try it.
handle-Tsuka
knob at end of handle-tsukagashira
fatter area leading to prongs and spike- moto
curved prongs- yoku
tips of prongs- tsume
striking portion of spike (last 2/3 of spike- monouchi
pointy tip of spike- saki

2.Kama- names like sword
tip- kissaki/ edge-ha/spine-mune/ridge-shinogi
where the base of blade arcs to enter the handle
is tang or nakago (seek good wood w/ 2 rivets)
butt of tsuka-soko often w/ long chain and metal
(kusari...Sp?) ball to trap weapons or limbs
* the shape of the kama varies, Japanese vs. Korean
etc.
* care of the wood of the is later
3.Tonfa- Handle and knob same as sai- tsuka and tsukagashira
Striking end same as sai-monuchi
in standard ready grip (short end pointing out
entire long end to the rear)
mae atama and ushiro atama
respectivly
the general striking sides are both- sokumen
the flat side immediately flush to forearm-shomen
opposite is soko
4. Bo- like most stave...easy peasy
the ends ar either saki or kontei
the middle is chukon-bu
*ask your higher rank instructors this simple Bo
question....
(not your Master,tho)
5. I cant type so I'm passing on nunchaku...kind
himo or kusari(see kama)/konto/ana/kontei
6.Find a book for the Nihonto or shinken smile

7. With few exceptions (cocobolo, rattan)SAND OFF the lacquer, clean sawdust well, everyone swears by some oil of preference...your wood will get dry and thirsty and needs attention, dry wood will break and stab your best friend in the eye...dont want that.
Some chip out for clove oil, some want nut oil (heard first pressing walnut is popular)
...I've found johnsons lemon wood oil to be good

Just some stuff...was that ok or kinda useless?

Karl. Peace.
