I love staff fighting, and i wish the japanese martial arts could come up with something turned to more realistic or even stylized(as they did for other martial arts for protection and divulgation) staff to staff combat instead of kata...

I suppose this is really just another version of the kata versus ... uh, whatever the alternative is, but you might take a look at the jo curriculum of Muso Shinto-ryu.

We've done sparring with foam flex staffs. Well, they're actually naginata, but when sparring have nearly the same application set. Or, you could conceivably do it with bamboo that has relief cuts in it (like shinai) and kendo armor.

Just thoughts.

at my club we tried the actionflex staffs and they all broke up(we are still thinking of making some costum ones). We still look for better solutions for that.

All bamboo or any other just a bit harder stuff does heavy injuries or requires expensive protections, done that too.

Naginata is very different from staff.. at least the way we do the staff tecnique(i havent dont much japanese jo, but did kendo for some time and a bit of naginata).
