It's like having authentication papers or an appraisal. A sword with kanteisho is usually more valuable and a much safer buy than one with out. The reason being is there are quite a few fakes out there. Not saying the blade isn't a good quality blade but there are some who will forge a good blade but then falsify a well-known signature in order to increase the value. Just like trying to duplicate a Van Gogh and pass it off as the real thing.

Having kanteisho from a reputable and well know organization or individual mean you are getting the real thing.

There are kanteisho for blades and also for the fittings as well.

Some places that issue kanteisho are,

The Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (N.B.T.H.K.)
The Nihon Token Hozon Kai (N.T.H.K.)
The Nihon Tosogu Bijutsukan
