Large Uniforms???

Large Uniforms??? - 07/06/06 12:55 AM

Hello:

I was talking with a martial arts uniform company in the midwest who dealt in extremely large uniforms. Unfortunately they did not have any uniform sufficently large and this was their specialty.

Anybody familiar with any company who does karate uniforms in the United States (or elsewhere) for meaningfully larger sizes?

Please advise/PM me, if you prefer...

Kamikaze goes up to size 9 for some of their gis. I believe they are large enough for someone 6'9.

As people who know me on this forum are already aware, I swear by Satori gi's. Just google Satori, their in Canada.

They do made to measure and are exceptional quality. Best I've ever owned and the service was second to none.

Drop them an e-mail or give them a call.

Hello

Thank you. Unfortunately height is not this gentleman's issue, would it were ~relatively~ so simple. No unfortunately his weight, and assorted lower body measurements put him well outside of a size 9.

His upper body (though also meaningfully heavy) is relatively normal sizes; neck to waist, sleeve lengths, etc. Hopefully keeping this thread alive/lively other company names for large karate gi will come to the surface...

Regardless thank you for your helpful input, this search continues...

Hello John L:

It has been a long while since I've had this priveledge, good to hear your thoughts, thank you for the recommendation!

As I said previously to medulant, unfortunately the individuals measurements and weight are ~meaningful~. I almost as stated previously had a match in a midwest manufacturer who does large sizes and so forth but after gathering the necessary information even their largest uniforms were inches too small. Modifying/tailoring any uniform would be obscenely expensive. Three months, six months, we are hopeful he'll easily fit comfortably. Now he's literally just outside their specifications...

We will try Satori and see what results (wondering if the person on the other end of the phone will somehow try and ~beat him~ with said phone, in place of the ~shinai~ & sticks of zen & buddhist mythos!

Again my thanks for your help, lets hope if not Satori, others names will come about...

Ronin,
This store manufactures oversize gi. I have had one of their uniforms and was very happy with it.
The man who owns the company is a highly ranked guy under oyaya and has produced uniforms for his crew. His has been in the business for a long time. His uniforms have more X's than a porn convention.

Hello Oldman

I thank you on this gentlemans behalf. I have had good dealings with www.Odyssey.com in the "past", and will gladly recommend them in future.

Unfortunately, this student's measurements are outside of their largest 12X uniform ... in very short time all hope, but currently not just yet ... Hopefully keeping this thread active will remind someone of a company they had forgotten who does X-large uniforms.... and we'll be able to find him one soon.

Hey Ronin

Have you spoken with Satori (they have a 1-800 #) I'd be interested in what they said.

Hello John:

I emailed www.Satori-gi.com this morning, and I too am eager to hear back. I'll give them a call hopefully later this afternoon... they look like a good candidate.

Heaven knows they come with ~good endorsements~ (sic. John L.) I will keep you apprised. Any other members think of additional companies who offer extremely large gi?

Sincere thanks,
Jeff

I know one of your replies said that www.oddessy.com's size 12 isn't big enough - I just wanted to see if you read the part about "bigger sizes available on request" - I know it says up to size 15 but I think they'll go as high as you need.

Maybe you already talked with them - I'm just checking.

Good Luck,

Re: Large Uniforms??? - 10/02/06 12:57 AM

I know this thread is a little on the old side but thoght I'd share in some experience in this matter. We had a gentleman start in my class several years ago because his doctor said he needed to lose 80 pounds before he would do surgery on him. He was a VERY large man. He could fit into the tops but not the pants so he went out and bought some white jersey material pants and wore those until he had lost enough weight to fit into the uniform pants. It's a little unothodox but it worked as a temporary solution. hope it helps!

I thought that I would share my experience with Oddessy Martial Arts Supply...

I am a school owner in Pensacola, FL and have always used Bold Look size 8 gis but I thought I'd try using Oddessy since good things have been said about them... and it went downhill from there.

I ordered *what I thought* was going to be a Size 8 Oddessy Brand Heavy Weight White uniform on 9/30/06. Instead I received a Bold Look gi.

Their website advertises that this would be an "Oddessy Brand" gi- "hand made in Kansas City, MO." As a Pensacola martial arts school owner I have a wholesale account with Bold Look and own several Bold Look gis. My cost on that gi is less than one-half of the cost of my order through Oddessy; if I another Bold Look gi, rest assured I would not have ordered through them at twice the cost.

Their website advertises that the gi I ordered is $69.99- instead I was charged $74.99 plus $10 shipping.

MOST IMPORTANTLY- their website advertises that I was going to receive a heavy weight gi, "highest quality 10 to 12 ounce fabric," instead I received a medium weight gi. I just confirmed the order through Bold Look that the 55/45 material is the inferior 8.5 ounce medium weight fabric. The lady who took my order sure didn't offer up this little nugget of information when I specifically ordered the heavy weight Oddessy uniform. This is a HUGE discrepancy in product advertised/ordered versus product shipped and is about as close as it comes to false advertising. Perhaps this one goes unnoticed by new students or hobbyists but I have the benefit of experience.

I called the other morning to discuss the issue and hopefully find a resolution but the lady with whom I spoke was less than pleased to be of service; to say that I am an unhappy customer at this point would be understating the obvious.

So I emailed Ted and it really spun out of control at that point. Basically, he indicated that it was my fault and that I had not ordered an Oddessy brand gi and that I was notified of that when I called in my order.

Well... I specifically asked for the Oddessy Brand Heavy Weight Gi while ordering via the phone- I even gave the lady who took my order the number associated with the gi on the website, 04015-08, and she said that she knew of which uniform I was speaking.

Their website doesn't even include non Oddessy Brand traditional gis- how could I order anything else?

More blame from the Oddessy camp included reviewing mystery audio tapes which somehow proves their point but of course they will not share the audio unless I pay them an additional $25.

Needless to say I've sent their product back and cannot honestly recommend them.

Re: Large Uniforms??? - 10/20/06 11:08 PM

Sorry to hear of you sour deal with Ted. I bought 2 Bold GIs from them. And I practice in them every day. He told me straight up they were not as shown. He said recent developments led them to an outside source (Bold Look)to make the GIs. And they no longer make their own. That was 4 month back.

Now in competition and when I attend Seminars and conventions I wear my Satori. It's custom made and fits like a dream. Plus it looks sharp. And I highly recommend Satori.

Yes they are a bit pricey. But it so worth it.

Re: Large Uniforms??? - 11/02/06 01:25 PM

Yes, it was an unfortunate set of circumstances I suppose. If he would have handled it differently it would not have been an issue but the whole "I got you on tape!" thing was a bit much on his part.

My Century super-middleweight gis came in and I am extremely pleased with the durability and feel of them. I am going to take your advice and try a Satori gi too.

Thanks for the heads up on them.
