The practice of slapping the mat during Ukemi (breakfall training) is to disperse the impact through a larger area of your body to minimize chance of injury.
In many styles, Kiai or Kihap is also part of the technique to release the tension upon impact.
Been a while since I practiced Ukemi. Hope I am explaining it right. Any Judokas or JJJ guys want to help out? I am at the point now where I just do it.

Ukemi waza is very important...it takes time to master.
Your fall is not so hard as you think..you just have to get mat tough..in time you will.
As sugested kia when hitting the mat which forces you to breath. You are supose to fall on your side so the impact is distributed along your back muscles Traps, Lats and your outside thigh. keep the inside arm at 45 degrees. This will keep you from hurting you shoulder. And most important RELAX. If you are tense you'll get hurt.
Ukemi waza is self taught. By that I mean when you do it wrong ..you'll know. When you do it right you'll know. Ed

Better to be a little bored and know how to fall and not get hurt, than to rush into something else and get injured

Enjoy your training and check back in wuith us and keep us informed on your progress. I have been training for 8 years now and remember what it was like being brand new. I would do it all over again.

today was my second day at the dojo and because i am a fast learner they starter teaching me tehnics about scaping some hugs and stuff but when they doit to me it hurts but thats the way that is suposed to be tought. shihan told me that i needed to exsercise my wrist and try to gain more flexibility since that type of jujitsu uses wrist locks most i think, but i really donnu if thats normal in any type of jitsu.
im very excited.
