ALBANY, N.Y. - Some gyms forbid hogging machines and or wearing flip flops. At one gym, grunting is grounds for expulsion. Albert Argibay of Beacon, N.Y. was escorted by police officers from a gym this week for grunting — which is against Planet Fitness' rules for maintaining a non-intimidating atmosphere.

"Perhaps I grunted, perhaps I didn't. It's open to interpretation," said Argibay, a 40-year-old corrections officer. He said he had his headset on when he was lifting 500 pounds on a squat machine at the gym in Wappingers Falls, about 80 miles north of New York City.

Planet Fitness, which has 120 locations across the country, markets itself as a place where anyone can feel comfortable in its "Judgment Free Zone."

Its rules, posted around the gym, state members cannot wear bandanas, grunt or bang weights on the ground. When an offender is spotted, a "lunk alarm" sounds to warn the member.

Across its locations nationwide, there is at least one expulsion every two weeks, said Mike Grondahl, CEO of Planet Fitness. He said grunting and dropping weights are the most common offenses.

"When somebody's in there and they grunt and they grunt loud, it's trying to bring attention to themselves to show everyone how strong they are," Grondahl said.

Argibay emitted the offending grunt Monday evening, a peak time for gyms, said Carol Palazzolo, the gym's general manager. She said she heard it from across the room, even though "the place was a zoo."

"He was looking directly at me and he did it four times," she said. "I'm not a doctor, but as far as I know, a grunt is a noise that comes out of one's body that is loud and is intimidating."

An argument ensued when she confronted him, and the police were called. Argibay was escorted out, but no charges were filed.

"It's an embarrassing situation to be in, over a grunt," Argibay said.

Most clubs have policies regarding proper gym manners, although expulsions are rare, said Brooke Correia, spokeswoman for the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association.

Grunting might be more taboo in gyms like Planet Fitness, which cater to exercise novices, Correia said.

The heaviest dumb bells at Planet Fitness are 80 pounds, meaning it's a place geared toward the general public, Palazzolo said.

She didn't know if Argibay was a chronic offender — he'd only been a member since Sept. 27. But it was the first time she kicked a member out for grunting.

"I don't know the reason behind grunting or not grunting. But if you need to grunt, you may go and join another gym," she said.

It seems a little silly to say the least, but at the same time the guy knew the rules. I have seen some people in the gym, and grunting is almost an affectation to them, they do it to impress people.

But most of the people I know who grunt do it as a form of exertion. I know I do. I don't particularly care if someone takes offence to it or not. I'm not doing it for them.

And as for not dropping weights... I'd defy anyone to clean and jerk 120 kilos and not drop it once the final phase was complete. Male and Female Olympic lifters grunt and drop weights all the time.

Suffice to say if the guy broke the rules (regardless of how stupid they might seem to some) then he should pay the penalty.

Neither me nor any of my weightlifter and powerlifter friends (MALE AND FEMALE) would train in a place like that though.

Hello Joel:

Stupid rule, but I would have paid money to overhear that argument....

"Grunter..."

"AM NOT..."

"...Look its posted there and there see...? Do me a favor keep it way down please?..."

"...UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMNGH..."

Grunting under extreme effort is quite natural. 500lb squat would make most people at least exhale loudly, if he had done so during 10lb lateral raise, I can see that being a bit silly.

I love all these rules that mainstream health centres put in place to protect the innocent from the 'evil' bodybuilders/powerlifters First day i ever walked in a gym, I was 16, and the only guys in there were Mr UK, Wales' Strongest Man, and all the local bouncers. They were all pure class, and were no end of help- they all became friends.

I think that gyms should do more to educate the public that muscles dont make a person bad or dangerous, rather than pandering to misconception and discrimination.

my friends who are only weeks away from opening their gym are having one rule however- No sleeveless training tops allowed unless your arms are 19 inches+ when cold

This is going to leave the majority of the people wearing long sleeves. Are you wearing a shirt or not Cord?

Oh yes I will be in a sleeved shirt alright, I am 17 and 17.3 respectively, but with the kind of stuff we are going to be doing in there, I aim to be sleeveless by 2008

No chance I'd ever get a chance to go sleeveless (16.75", 17"). So if you get some good tips from working out at the new gym that I might be able to use ... then pass them on. Don't be a hog.

I think if I focused solely on weight lifting I could easily get back into the 18"+ range but 19" would be pushing it. Martial Arts have been great and I'd never give them up but one can wish for the size still. Perhaps during my ACL recovery and when I can't go to class I will focus on those body parts that I can instead of sitting on the coach collect dust and fat.

EDIT: Oh ya ... and my dad can beat up your dad. (not really, mines frail and from what I remember, yours is still fit)

oh dude, I can't wait to link the website- its going to be crazy. Weighted sleds, 3 indoor sprint tracks, full length ropes for climbs, rings, chin bars, sandbags, tires, chains, power racks, bands, glute ham raises. Just think a purpose built 'World strongest man' type functional exercise facility, being run by one of the best Trainers in the country- i mean crazy good, like has forgotten more than I ever knew.
I may never get to go sleeveless in there, but its going to be insane fun trying to earn the right

That sounds like fun!!

Maybe they should make a rule that you have to grunt when lifting.

I can't stand hearing people go "AGGGRRHHH!" and then right after they drop the weight on the floor they stand up and look around to see who was watching.

Some people will let out a "Pure effort grunt" which at times is understandable, but the people who just plain scream tick me off.
