Nose Tweak - 07/21/05 09:40 PM

Okay another true story.

I was working with a group of street aggressive police officers who didn't mind taking someone to jail whether they wanted to go or not. We were dealing with guy who was hopped on something or drunk or just stupid but he was really running his mounth, threatening disorderly conduct, the whole nine. Well my guys are all around him and they look like sharks in the water I knew the guy was biting off more than he could chew. I reach over someone and tweak the guys nostrils and I say man your really getting ready to mess up here you need to move on. Guess what...he meekly said, okay man and walked off. Crazy but true. Don't try this at home I'm not sure if the nose tweak would ever work again.

By nose tweak do you mean when you put your finger or hand underneath their nose and lift up?

This is one technique that we were taught and is extremely effective. Randy who is a blue/red belt in my class is also a guard at a Maximum Correctional Facility. These are bad ... very bad guys he deals with. He was telling us last week about a inmate who got out of control. Normally they would be more agressive with the inmate but with security cameras and "their rights" he though instead he would put the fingers underneath the inmate's nose and escort him into his cell. Normally two or three guards have to escort the inmate to his cell but there was no problem for Randy to do it by himself. The other guards stood back and watched and couldn't believe it. It worked effectively and nobody was hurt.

I think he means a playful pinch.

Oldman, you're right on the nose!

Actually, I think the other technique is a pressure point technique wherein you use your index finger to apply pressure under the nose toward the middle of the head. You have to apply counter pressure or the guy has to on the ground to prevent moving back. You use the side of your finger to drive up and it creates mucho pain. There is a name for this technique but I'd have to look it up, pressure point.

I worked in a steel mill once when I was just out of college, brown belt in yoseikan aikido. I was teaching a class and all my coworkers knew it. One guy was a good bit older, fat and had a pretty sour attitude a lot of the time. We got on the subject of his military experience and he said he'd been an MP.

I said he probably learned a lot of arresting techniques and asked him to show me one.

For a fat old guy, he moved really fast. He had me in a pinch of my upper lip, just below the nose and I couldn't do jack. I was up on my toes in a very accommodating attitude. He was nice enough to let me go. You would have never thought he knew anything to look at him. Just shows to go you never know who you're dealing with.

I agree. I think it's very dangerous to make assumptions about someone when you don't know jack about them. I get tickled when I run across kids while I'm working that think there really tough and they talk junk to me without knowing anything about me. Some I've had to put on the ground but it's almost funny because they have such a false impression of themselves and don't take into consideration a person's background. When you meet a stranger on the street you don't know the guy could be the baddest dude you ever met so don't take them lightly, it's foolish.

I like the nose thing, subtle yet effective... Good deal.
