My little buddy - 07/30/03 08:48 PM

A new kid transfered to our dojang, and ever since he came, we have been in awe. Hes about 10 years old, and the shortest little kid i have ever seen. His legs are short, his wrists are stick thin, his whole body is tiny. But whenever we spar, that kid is amazing. hes quick and poweful, pulls olympic style moves, and overall just puts trememndous effort into it. He goes to every tourney available, but barely ever places because he always has to spar WAY bigger opponets. But he always goes back and wants to fight again.

But he had a secret only my master knew. He had open heart surgery about 7 years ago.

I just think that kid is the greatest, and this story prolly doesnt mean as much to you as it does to me, but i just wanted to tell you anyway! LOL

Smitten, I was the shortest and youngest person in my class, until we had a girl who transfored to the dojo. She is 2 months younger than me, 1 inch shorter than me. In my dojo, I had to go up against all adults, and they were to tall for most of the holds we were doing. Now that the girl came, I acutually can do moves on someone. She is my best friend now.

I know how it feels to be short. im 4'11, and have been picked on some. Some of the moves I do in aikido, are hard to do cause of my size. m not an adult yet so I guess ill grow. Please post on here again. No sarcasim taken.

Your story is wonderful. I will share it with some people in my dojo whom always seem to complain about little aches or pains Or that they are small or a girl. Here is a little kid , with heart problems' that shows more fighting spirit than a lot of adults i know.It seems that he has overcome a disability and you can tell him that I, some body he doesn't even know, am proud of him too. I guess our michigan kids are just tough.

Smitten, your reminds me of a pretty similar story. On my dojo's website, I read about a kid named Sam who's twelve years old and looks about seven. He has multiple health problems (no esophagus, two major heart surgeries and under-developed lungs.) He loves sports, but can't participate very well in them because he can't always keep up with the other players. But I've seen him train in Karate and he's one heck of a fighter. He's fast and enthusiastic and to watch him train you'd never know he has so many health problems! Karate also helped his body so that a third heart surgery was postponed. He's an amazing kid, and I agree with Rondon. To watch him, you can't say you have a cause to complain about anything.

Try being tall and practicing aikido! These long legs of mine get in the way and we have to go extra low when doing techniques like shihonage. One of my Sensei's is about 4' 11" and she can deal with the bigger practitioners just as well as some of the smaller ones. Maybe if you use your size to your own advantage.
