Is Aikido for me?

Is Aikido for me? - 07/05/04 10:20 PM

I think I would like to get involved with Aikido. I am 6'3" 300 lbs (mostly muscle...okay maybe a few pounds around the waistline, but in very good shape). I am interested in learning self defense without using my old offensive lineman routine (using mass and strength). Is Aikido for me? Please advise.

If that is what you want, then aikido is a perfect fit. It trains one to not oppose force, but harmonize with it. When you start, be sure to focus first on the stances and footing. Especially for a man of your size, stances are very important. they are your foundation upon which you will build a house of aikido. Make it a good one. Just a suggestion from one student to another.

Sounds good, I went into aikido with a bodybuilding background, its good, you dont need as much flexibility as other arts, but beware, you have a lot of seiza to endure.
