3 way guarding - 08/04/04 08:17 AM

This is a guarding block which your 2 hand is up ong leg up
I use this in sparring
when the opponent is within my leg distance
I jam him out
when he is near i use my punches
Any suggestions for me to improve on this?

It is not very wise to spar with one leg off the ground. It makes it easier for your sparring partner to rush and run you over.

Not to be offensive, but it kinda sounds like your scared to be hit. Instead, why don't you work on your counter attack timing. If your not very good with countering, then try to be quicker and more precise with your attacks, hitting the open spot as soon as it presents itself.

Heres an article about sparring. It might be helpful.

I agree with goldencrane, one leg off the ground may be effective in tkd sparring, but anyone with any sense will put their hands in front of them to cushion the kick, and then throw you to the ground. OUCH!

Counter-attacking is also a useful skill to practice, OklahomasGreg. Just be careful not to rely on them in a sparring situation.

I realized that this weekend. My brother and I entered a tournament. He was waiting for his opponent to attck, so that he could counter. Needless to say, the other guy kept lunging off balanced to get a quick love tap of an attack. Which goes back to the same ol story of TKD as a sport.
