comparisson between two martial arts - 05/12/04 07:46 AM
Well recently I have posted a question and fpr another time i am going to post another question. Recently I had a discussion with a friend of mine. The discussion is about martial art. Later my friend, asked me what martial I am picking up now.I told her that I am learning Jujitsu. All of the sudden she said that learning jujitsu is waste of time and when it comes to street fight,it is not effective. Now i am in a confuse state. Which martial art is better, karateor Jujitsu when it comes to street fight.(my friend is a state squad karate exponent but nothing to shout about it)

honestly?
I would say "neither".
Karate is too stiff for my liking.
JJ has some good stuff though. Now if you are 1 on 1 then JJ could help you "close" a street fight.
Just like Karate could help you "open" one.
But on their own...yeah..

Just choose what you like m8. I Do Kung Fu, but my friends do Karate, Ninjuitsu and Tae kwon Do. Just do what you like best. Thats the only way to learn.
Just ignore negative comments. Good Luck.

Here's a plug the martial art I practice is Wado (imagine that) if you get a good teacher it is about 65% JuiJitsu 35% Karate. It is almost semantics that it is even called Karate but our founder took Jui Jitsu which he practiced first and added to it what he saw as the most effective techniques of what he learned from Funakoshi, like the roundhouse kick the side kick and the straight punch.

Vicky,
either Karate or Ju Jitsu is good. Neither is best, but how you use it towards a perp is what is important. Okay lets break it down.
Karate, someone makes the wrong punch or kick and then open the area by striking your opponent, very hard very strict. It works.
Ju Jitsu, someone throws a punch, but then gets lanched by his or her own weight which is caused by a nage waza, following up on a shime waza or a kansetsu waza. So you think, jujitsu is like a virus, once you make your mistake, your are in it for the run, as the attacks will slowly take you apart.
Try your friend for example, have her throw a kick or punch, and then react by demonstrating a technique that she may fancy over. Try, I believe she will respect you more and your arts.
My friends and I spar sometimes with what they know and what I know.

Vicki
Arts don't fight anyone.
Its the PERSON using them that counts.
Some arts focus on different things.
"Karate" and "jujutsu" are generic words for maybe 100's of schools and styles.
(so are Kung-fu-or JKD-or any number of terms)

i myself do karate, it is great to practice the higher level techniques but when it comes to a street fight i would use the simplest moves and apply them to my situation naturally, learning all of it is no good it you cant feel comftable so pick the art that suits you best

When it comes to street fighting, all that is, is use anything to your advantage. There are no rules, regulations and certainly no refs. Martial arts (and the self defense) can and will help if you are attack in a big city.

What art is better? There is no such thing. If you realy sit down and think about it there is no such thing as a unique art. There are only so many ways you can punch, elbow, knee and kick someone. Saying one art has something different than another is pointless. The difference comes in how that system is taught and how they train. There are always going to be the differences in stance and punching style (full fist rotation vs. qtr fist rotation). Are those realy differences or just preferences?
There are a few basics you have to have in order to be a efficient fighter.
1. know how to hit and kick properly.
2. Know the proper targets and what tool to use on them.
3. Have a good understanding of timing, rythem and distance.
4. Know how to properly condition your body for a fight.
5. Understand the importance of proper foot placement.
6. Have a good understanding of body mechanics.
People need to understand training for 3-4 hours a week isn't going to get you very far no matter what you study. The key is repitition. You have to reprogram your initial reaction and make what you are learning second nature. Understand that fights go to the ground or can be toe to toe, could involve more than two people. Having a multitude of fancy and complicated techniques isn't always good. Most of the time your not going to be able to use them no matter how well you know them. The reason for this is when a person is scared or in a stressfull situation the heart rate goes up. When your heart rate increases you loose motor skills. Between 150bpm and 170bpm you are pretty much working off of your gross motor skills. Your gross motor skills are the basic fundamental movements, complex punching and kicking will no longer work. One of two things needs to happen in order to be effective in this 150-170 range. Either you need to train your more basic techniques harder and focus on them, or train using some kind of reality sparing to try to stay more calm in a tense situation. Then there is always the fact that no matter how much you train and no matter how good you are in the dojo, will you fight? I've seen 4th and 5th degrees get handled pretty well on the street because when fight or flight kicked in there body chose flight and they got clocked. This is why the basics should be pushed so much.
Why train in just one, why not both karate and jujutsu. Or at least find a school that will teach you some of both.

hello,
as u can see im from brazil
here Jiujitsu is very popular. we've got the famou brazilian jiu jitsu. belive me, heaps people here do Jiu jitsu.
if u want to know if jiujitsu is effective in street fight i'd say NO.
ive seen some fights against JJ, and most of then they loose. why?
because u dont take a street fight to the floor like that. u cant roll on the floor and wait to do your arm lock.
in street fights, most of time u arent alone. people wouldnt just watch u get bashed on the floor.
another thing, is too hard to take u to the floor if u r good praticer of tkd, mt or kung fu. they came to take u down with their head down, easy to kick their heads.
if u still like JJ, keep doing it BUT if u r looking for street fights, start to do a stand up fight, id recomend muay thai, because muay thai and jj together is a good combination.
