What exactly is "trolling"??? - 03/02/06 04:59 PM

Hello:

Seperate asking questions for the purpose of beginning a dialog, having discussions, perhaps debates, honing ones thoughts (ie by posting publically) from that which presumedly would be the "dark side" of such writing....

What is this trolling, specifically? I could find no definition on here. Did I miss it?

General tip: When you have a question that starts with "What is...", you can more often than not, find it on wikipedia.

Hello Ed:

I say freely I am in constant & genuine awe of your outstanding & excellent links. I suppose examining the Wikipedia description... I suppose my basic sentiment would be... is not the purpose of posting to a forum to generate discussion, debate, an essential presentation of ones ideas, views and thoughts? Now provided ones intent is a "positive one", (perhaps a genuine one being a more apt description)... it strikes me potentially as being "slippery slope"...

Volume contribution is not trolling, correct? Having strong beliefs, views both consciously or otherwise is also not trolling, yes? Thought this idea should be hashed out a bit... if something is not blatant "in my face" trolling... how does one tell the difference?

Do a search on users "Hedgehogey" and "Kickcatcher" for examples of more subtle trolls. After seeing enough of them, you start to be able to recognize them. More blatant trolls you may not find, because they get deleted quickly.

I suggest you find a qualified instructor in your area, and if you happen to live near Oldman, I am sure he can recomend one.

Hello Harlan:

Thank you for the contribution. (Jeff frustrated how he missed finding that specific thread using what surely should have given it as a hit...)

How do we tell the difference between an agenda, or preferring/enjoying being a ~devils advocate~ from "nasty" trolling? I post for example many things, sometimes simply being philosophic... having a thought (sometimes half baked, occasionally raw/uncooked entirely)... often merely trying to hone my thoughts a bit better at times... on occasion mental diarrhea at times... I realize.

Trying to be proactive, understand the idea better.

it's a subjective decision. no formula. it's as inexact as people judging other people. At what point does a bartended cut someone off?

Hello Ed:

Inexact, purely subjective.... YIKES! Given its prominence whether here/elsewhere in cyberspace I would have thought there would have been a really, really specific & precise checklist of sorts.

Well to be exact, it is Oldman that enjoys Morgan Freeman. Razwell lives. (north of the 60, west of the 20, tropics rule)
