US Judo Vegas Tourney to continue as Scheduled - 09/22/01 07:52 PM

I am pleased to announce that the IMCA America U.S. Open Judo Championships
in Las Vegas on October 12-14 will continue as scheduled. The tragic events
of September 11th have impacted the world. I am encouraged by the support we
have received from the invited nations and their correspondences reconfirming
participation in Las Vegas. The continued commitment to bring international
judo to the United States during these times of strife sends a strong message
that the world judo community will not be diverted in our continual mission
of goodwill, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.
Jeremy Glick and Paul Pansini to be honored:
We are sad to report that the American Judo family has lost 2 of our members
in the senseless Attack on America September 11, 2001.
Jeremy Glick, a National Collegiate Judo Champion, was a part of the heroic
action on United flight 93. Jeremy, along with other passengers, attempted to
regain control of the hijacked aircraft that was intended for a high profile
target in our nations capitol. As a result of the actions of Jeremy and
others, the plane came to rest in rural Pennsylvania. I have sent a letter to
President Bush advising him of USA Judo's strongest endorsement of Jeremy as
a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Paul Pansini, a Bronze Medallist in the World Police and Fire Games, has been
reported as missing since the tragic attack on the World Trade Center the
morning of September 11th. Paul was part of the rescue and evacuation effort
by the New York Fire Department that was underway prior to the building
collapse.
The heroic action of these two members of the judo community will be honored
at the IMCA America U.S. Open Championships in Las Vegas Oct 12-14. We
extend our deepest sympathy to the Glick and Pansini families for the loss of
these two heroes.
