Hello Brewer,
Kano Sensei studied the Tenjin Shinyo Ryu (and others..) from which many of the techniques of Kodokan Judo come..'Softened' by Kano Sensei to prevent the injuries to practitioners..Techniques such as Koshinage, Seoinage, Ashibarai, Haraigoshi, Sukuiashi, Kuchikitaoshi, Osotogari, Sumigaeshi, and Masutemi and Yoko Sutemi..Also a wide selection of the chokes and immobilization techniques of the Shinyo ryu were used by Kano from the 124 techniques in the curriculum overall.
Kano sensei trained under Fukuda Hachinosuke in 1877 and under Iso Mataemon Masatomo in 1879 after Fukuda sensei's death..Kano evenually achieved well enough in the ryu to be told the Okugi or secret teachings of the school.
Hope this helps you.
