Judo Dojo in toronto? - 07/22/09 04:09 AM

Hello people.

i am looking to trying out Judo, and looking to get seriously into it at some point in time. Are there any good Dojo's that anyone can suggest for a beginner? preferable in the downtown region. Thanks so much

There are a few dojo around downtown Toronto. The ones I know of are:

Mecca MMA, at Queen and Bathurst has Judo program run by Goki Uemura, (8th Dan)

I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile, as they also have dedicated no-gi Judo days, which is really rare.

University of Toronto also has a Judo club, but the costs can be high if you're not a U of T student or alumni. It's located at Hart House:

And there is the Ronin Judo Club near Davenport and Landsdowne. I hear this is a nice, small club with great instruction.

Toronto BJJ also has a couple of Judo classes a week, but I think they are geared more toward BJJ comp. than tradional Judo (could be wrong though). They are at Bloor and Clinton.

There are also numerous BJJ and grappling clubs in the city.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes,
Chris

so i did my first class at ronin judo this Wednesday, great group of people! they veterans of the dojo helped me get on track taught me the basics of ground fighting, and even at the end, one of the veterans let me have a small mock fight with her. the first thing she said to me was "i am just here for the ride", and it was great of her to let me get some practical experience with the moves i just learned. i recommended this club for beginners, or people who just want to have fun, rather then being bossed around!

Hey, someone actually came back and posted about the experience! This must be a first! Seriously though, I'm glad you found a good dojo (and sorry for not replying sooner).

Hi,

Sorry to reopen a long dead thread, but you guys seem to be knowledgeable about the toronto area!

I'm looking for something we have at home (lyon in France), whereby all judokas from the department get together once a week and practice together, mostly randoris. I find it the most efficient way to prepare competitions.

Failing the existence of such a gathering here, what would be the closest thing to it? What is the biggest club nearby?

The reason I'd rather not join a small club (generally friendlier) is that I'm only really interested in tachi-waza randoris for now, with as many different partners as possible. I have an extremely busy schedule and, as much as I'd like to learn more, well I'm more interested in just practicing now..! I should mention that I've 20 years of judo and countless competitions behind me so it's not like I'm unprepared..! smile

Any responses would be greatly appreciated!!!
Cheers,

Anthony
