Wado Ryu - Is this Karate or Jujitsu - 07/20/06 08:07 AM

Fellow Martial artists

I have done some searching as I have recently replaced two styles (Krav Maga and Atemi JJ) with one Wado Ryu. Now from my findings there is some debate as to what it is so I am placing it on this forum as its origin is Shindo Yoshin Ryu which is an old Jujitsu style then it was blended with Shotokan karate.

Please advise/debate the correct lineage of Wado Ryu

Dobersky,

Ohtsuka, the founder of Wado held the menkyo kaidan in Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu before he began studying Karate under Funakoshi. He also trained under others including Motbu, Mabuni and Konishi. (As an aside, Funakoshi's karate was not called Shotokan at this time - it was named by his students after his death. It means House of Shoto, Shoto being Funakoshi's pen name).

Have a look around this site which contains good info on wado, it's origins, it's founder and the influence of jujitsu on this karate ryu.
