Accompanying or Encompassing?? - 05/03/05 11:17 PM
An interesting discussion arose tonight after the BJJ workout. Many of these guys have backgrounds in Ju-jitsu(japanese) and judo.
My understanding (limited) is that Dr. Kano created judo by removing the more dangerous techniques from Ju-Jitsu. If this is the case, by studying Ju-jitsu wouldn't you learn all of judo's techniques but not vice versa? Under this assumption could a ju-jitsu ka claim rank in judo? Could they enter and compete in judo competitions? Wouldn't it be more advantageous to learn Ju-jitsu so that you would have all the techniques and then "limit" yourself to the judo approved techniques during a competition?
That is alot to ask. Please feel free to comment on any or all of it. I completely understand that all of these questions are based on an initial assumption that may be flawed. I am prepared to be corrected as well as educated.
