Underweight - 04/15/05 11:28 PM

First of all, greetings, im new here

now. I am fairly short, about 5'2, and i am about 82pounds. I am not anorexic, i have a pretty high motabolism, I do Karate training pretty regularly, and i eat healthy foods. I rarely eat junk foods. I am extremely underweight...i calculated my BMI, and im about 15. It said below 17 is unhealthy. yet im fit, i eat healthy, and i do have some muscle, AND i don't look anorexic. Do you think I will even up as i get older (im still only 14), is there any way, food wise, i can put on some size? or do you think its not a problem as long as im reasonably healthy?
Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm no expert, but I would say, don't worry about your BMI until you're older and you've stopped growing. Have you spoken to your doctor about this? If you eat healthy you exercise regularly, and you're not anorexic, I wouldn't worry about it. I used to be underweight too. I wanted to gain weight, so I started eating more, and I started eating meat. Over four years, I've managed to gain almost twenty pounds, and I'm at a healthy weight now. I really wouldn't worry about it - you're only 14 right now.

BMI is a highly outdated formula that, unfourtunately, is still used by many "health experts". BMI does not account for lean muscle mass versus fat; just overall weight vs. height.

If your only 14, have no fear---you'll put on weight as your metabolism slows down. It may not for a while....mine didn't until I was in my late 20's, and only in the past few years have I been able to pack on some serious muscle.

Eat clean, eat lots, and train hard.
