weight loss but bodyfat remains the same... - 05/16/09 09:17 AM

Hi guys iv been dieting for 3 weeks now and dropped about 7kg. although i have not lost any bodyfat anywhere! iv gone form 98kg to 91.6kg and nothing!

i can tell my body shape is still the same my trousers fit the same also i measure myself. not only that but as i am losing weight my bodyfat% is going up on the scales, i take it this is because the ratio of fat in my body is estimated higher as i have not lost any fat. why am i not losing any fat? and before you say... well you must be losing some around your back or somewhere... trust me i am not i look in the mirror everyday i would notice a change no matter how small and the bodyfat reading seems to agree with me by going up as my weight is dropping.

any ideas? do i just need to cut some more and eventually see the bodyfat drop?

iv been eating around 1800 calories a day and my body is defenatly not in starvation mode, iv had no loss of muscle and no loss of fat the only thing i can think of is water weight. i just feel as if i am getting no where ill be at my target weight soon 85kg and if i have not lost anything by then i am going to start to worry. :/

Its not water weight - that would give you fluctuating readings, and if you were consistently short 14lbs of body water, you would probably be dead, not complaining

Easy way to confirm this is to check the colour of your urine. If its dark (anywhere from Iron Bru to black tea), you are dehydrated. If its light yellow or clear, then you are fine.

If you have lost 14lbs in 3 weeks, then you are in starvation mode. No way can you lose more than a couple of lbs per week without catabolising muscle tissue.

I notice that your recent posts have related to oestrogen blockers and pro-hormones. Am I right in thinking that you have been restricting your eating and trying to use these things to prevent muscle loss?

If so, welcome to the world of BS supplements.

If not, then it doesnt matter- either your 1800 cals is not enough to cope with your physical requirements (whats your training regime these days?), or they are nutritionaly defficient/unbalanced.

Of course the other possibility is that your scales are faulty.
Home BF scales are notoriously temperamental, and electrostatic testing has strict protocols to get an accurate reading anyway.

Follow these steps to maximise consistency in readings.

1. Put new batteries in scales
2. Keep scales on the same hard surface, in a constant temperature
3. only use them once a week, on the same day of the week, at the same time of the day, wearing the exact same clothes (or lack of them).
4. personal protocols: No food or caffeine for 2 hours before test. water only up until 1 hour before test.Nothing at all in hour before test. Empty bowels before test.

Having done all that, the readings still wont be accurate, but they will be comparable test to test.

its not the scales i weight myself once a week in the exact same environment. im not taking ANY supplements at the moment as im cutting, my exercise regime is a simple split routine 4 days a week lifting weights. no cardio.

i haven't lost any muscle and am still getting strength gains in the gym. hate to say your wrong cord but you are, i have measured myself and compared pictures but i think the best way of telling is looking in the mirror. i have tried other bodyfat analyzers and i get the same reading. i started off at 36% and i now get a reading of 39% as i have dropped weight but the radio of fat in my body must be higher. the only explanation i can think of is water to be honest. muscle size is better if anything my body feels fine. i have bundles of energy and feel i am getting more than enough calories, i feel fit, strong, just overweight aswell! however i am not obese but im sure bodyfat is the main cause of health problems so cutting it is my main priority. so far i have seen nothing, all the evidence seems to back me up and i have always noticed fat loss in the past when it came off easily. i will cut down to my target weight of 85kg if i still have no difference in bodyfat i will consult a doctor maybe get him to send me to a specialist in thermodynamics.

98kg with 36% body fat = 35.28kg fat

91.6kg with 39% body fat = 35.72 kg fat

IF (big if) the readings are accurate, then you have gained .44kg of fat in three weeks while losing 5.96kg of "other" body weight. I'm assuming that weight loss would not be from bone, organs, or skin loss. That would leave mainly muscle or bowel weight loss. And I sure hope you didn't have a 5kg crap.

Or, as Cord says, you have a highly faulty body fat analyzers and should seek professional diagnostic.

Like Cord said, it can't be water weight.

Tom, you are talking about 1 stone of water- to be that consistently dehydrated, you would by now be having renal problems, and your pi$$ would be the same colour as rust-water.
Not to mention that you still feel strong and do not percieve any loss of size or strength in the muscles - by your own observations it cannot be dehydration.

The key word here is consistent - the chances of having the same level of hydration at every point of measuring is highly unlikely- water and waste in the system can make your bodyweight fluctuate up to around 6lbs in any 24hrs, it simply cannot account for 14lbs of body mass loss as a constant. Impossible.

You say you are lifting on a 4 day split, on 1800 cals - are you still doing your MT/BJJ? or have you given up MA to persue weights for their own reward?

A 4 day split, for a grown man, on 1800 cals is going to put you in a state of catabolism- you are not giving your body the time, or tools, with which to repair itself, and it is cannibalising extraneous muscle tissue in order to feed itself.

If you were morbidly obese, with years of sedentary lifestyle, and new to training, then I would expect you to lose more than 2 lbs a week for the 1st month or so, but as an active, average BMI MAist, there is no way on earth that you can lose 14lbs of bodyweight, in 3 weeks, healthily, and with no muscle atrophy.
