wrist problem, need advice - 11/13/05 10:34 AM
Sorry in advance if this is the wrong forum!
About four months ago I developed an intense pain in my left wrist. I went a bit easy on it, and soon thereafter I started getting pain in my right wrist. I think it's likely that the injuries resulted from bad ukemi: landing on my hands instead of taking the falls properly. This all happened a couple months after moving up a rank into a level where many more joint lock techniques are trained, and so it was very hard to train effectively, since as soon as anyone even so much as began to apply a wrist lock on me I would feel intense pain. When I try to stretch my wrists, I don't get much range of motion (as much as I should, I think) without experiencing some pain. And forget about doing pushups the normal way!
After trying to "go easy" (i.e., train lightly, inform partners of the problem before we began training, being very conscious of how I fall, etc) on them for a couple of months, they didn't seem to be getting much better. One of my two instructors said that boxers have wrist problems all the time and recommended that I tape my wrists pretty tightly before each training session. In fear that I might permanently damage them (if I haven't alraedy) I decided to take some time off altogether. It's now been a (difficult!) month of not training MA to let my wrists heal, and it's not clear to me that they've gotten any better.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice? Any treatments? My situation is made worse since I do not have health insurance (job doesn't provide it, can't afford it) and I really don't have the money to go to a doctor, so any input would be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks!
