In general, hi lightens a sword, but also weakens it a bit. If your technique is good, the hi shouldn't cause you much trouble during cutting, but if you are new to cutting the usual advice is to choose a sword without hi for cutting because they are more forgiving of bad cuts. You're less likely to end up with a bent sword.

The Hi gives you a nice audible feedback when you swing it right, it helps a little with training. Also, swinging a sword in a quiet room will give a somewhat distinctive noise that will tell you if your technique is good. But, like Mr. Mahan said, it does compromises the blade a little.
