what is a strong steel for a sword because i had a 440 stainless and the snapped and my friend said that 420 isn't any better

Stainless is not suitable for anything other than hanging on the wall. What does your sensei say?

What were you cutting with the sword to break it in the first place? Hard target, soft target, another sword?
Before you decide what sword to get you must have some idea of what you're going to use it for.

Before anything you should ask your sensei. No sensei? No need to bother unless you plan on just hanging it on the wall.
