MJER san-kyu iaido test - 05/12/08 11:09 PM

Hi folks,

Here are two videos from my MJER san-kyu iaido test. I started last july and thankfully did not embarrass myself TOO much at the test. I am the one with the reddish beard. This was at the Japanese Martial Arts Center in Ann Arbor with sensei Nick Suino.

Is the third kata gyakuto? If it is, it's done differently than in my school... Your bato is slightly different too.

I don't feel advanced enough to express any valuable opinion concerning the quality of your technique, so I won't.

What I will do is wish you good luck. Hope you passed!

The third waza in the first video is Ukenagashi from seiza no bu. That one is not me, thats one of our beginning students.

Is that Suino-sensei's dojo?

I recognize that third kata as Ukenagashi, but we do it differently now.

if your the guy with the beard, nice job

Definitely Ukenagashi, but a somewhat different from us as well.

To be totally honest, I would not call that performance of Ukenagashi representative of how it is normally done within our dojo. The basic checkpoints are there though.

Borrek was Holland Sensei up on the board during this test?

Hai! You can see him helping to evaluate us in one of the videos when we are performing Yaegaki.

Do you know Holland Sensei?

Very nice examples of Iaido. Do you know what your results are yet? It was interesting to see the stylistic differences between the different branches of MJER, I practice the Jikishin-Kai International branch myself.

I agree, and I have never seen the toho kata before, very interesting.

The two Toho kata being displayed are Zengogiri from Mugai Ryu and Shihogiri from Suio Ryu.
