and I've already got one against me...No dojo for this dude...I've ordered a book "Bokken: art of the japanese sword", but I'm hoping this will be enough for me to get good. Any tips?

this kind of thing's been commented on enough.. you might be able to get some basics alone, but nothing beats spending time at a dojo... think of it as trying to learn a language from a book... nothing beats going to a country that speaks that language..

Have you ever heard of anybody that's gotten good via book?

sorry to burst your bubble but nothing will replace correct training in a dojo with a good instructor.

I've done a fair bit with bokken and also have this book in my library, however technique is best learnt and perfected under the gaze & correction of your instructor!

No-one I know of has ever got any good learning from a book.

There are things that the book can't show you in technique that will make a huge difference in how you wield your weapon.

however, training alone once you have knowledge of the basics is never bad, you just need a teacher to correct you at the end of the week.
