Questions on Kendo

Correct me if im mistaken but I think that kendo is on japanese sword fighting arts.. anyway I was wondering how they hit in kendo.for example do they hit with arms fully extended or not and I thought I heard somewhere that they don't use the rist that movement come from the arm.If you can help me clear this up thankyou and if you can give me a description of how they hit and parry etc. that would be good to
