They, historically, seemed to have a national thing about names.
Singapore was renamed "Syonanto" when their Imperial Army invaded the island during WWII, and of course from "karate" to Karate.

It's still "Iwo Jima" to me. Just like Myanmar is still "Burma". Never was much for being politically correct.

Same here.
Don't care what people say, Burma is still Burma to me.
Same with Iwo Jima.

Why stop there?
The Kingdom of Thailand was?
Bombay went back to Mumbai, Ceylon went back (?) to Sri Lanka, Peking went back to Beijing and I think Japan itself should go back to Jomon.

Thailand was Thailand,
Then a bunch of Frenchmen and some English came and said;
Frenchman: "Thailand. Thai. Land. Land of the Thai, so Thailand."
Englishman: What a bother. Come up with something easy, quick.
*Hokkien trader runs past the two men*
Chineseman: Siam, siam, get out of my way!
Frenchman: I got it! Siam!
Englishman: Siam it will be then.

Japan is Nippon but Japanese don't get their knickers in a bunch when everybody else calls their country Japan.
