I feel pretty dumb. I thought Okinawans all spoke Japanese.

Matt, most do. and Japanese is the only language taught in their school system now. go back one generation and most Okinawans were bilingual. go back a gen after that and most spoke Hogen (Okinawan 'dialect' quite different from Japanese).

Ryukyu language has been dying and is all but nearly gone.
