reverse punch in kata - 04/17/16 04:33 AM

I was taught that the reverse punch is karate's main punch. I also was taught that training in the 1800's and early 1900's was primarily through kata. I just realized that up to 90% of punches in all the traditional katas are oi zuki (lunge punches). If the reverse punch is karate's #1 punch, why isn't it more prevalent in the katas? Any thoughts?
