the MattJ/RazorFoot video archives - 05/24/10 07:59 PM

Since there's nothing else going on here, some more ancient training vids to laugh/gasp/be awed by:

Some multi-opponent stuff. Mildly hilarious because my shoe keeps flying off. Note how JBD and I crack the heck out of each other at 1:15 mark or so -

RazorFoot doing a nice kip-up at the end of this vid. Bet he wishes he could still do that now. I'm only laughing because he's not here to hurt me, LOL -

This guy is a local tournament champion, and (currently a brown belt in BJJ) now one of my BJJ instructors -

This one kind of summed of the group zeitgeist. Someone gets hurt, you toss them a shinguard, and away they go. "Walk it off", LOL -

Here is me doing some breaking for my black belt test. Cool, huh? Not so cool was the fact that I fractured my wrist breaking the concrete. No, not on the blocks - on the floor. I thought they were going to be a lot harder. I was wrong. :p

2 things;

1. You've packed on a few pounds of muscle since 1987.
2. They had cameras in 1987??

Hey MattJ,
What style do you get your kicks from? You've probably said it before, so excuse me if I'm just having a brain fart here. This is just curiousity. Also, I'm seeing alot of open hands and fingers(more by others than by you), did you guys end up with lots of jammed/broken fingers in those days?

Re: the MattJ video archives - 05/25/10 01:21 PM

My kicking style is actually TKD based, as many of my sparring partners were TKD black belts. I've never formally studied it, but they all showed me things informally. My kung fu and Aikido knowledge came about the same way.

Jammed/broken fingers? Hell yes. Note in several of the vids, one (or more) of us had fingers and wrists taped or braced. We used to specialize in kicking each other in the hands (pretty effective, actually), and you'll see it in some of these vids. We also simulated throat shots and eye rakes. Occasionally VERY REALISTIC simulations, DOH!

Fun times, but I don't train like that too much now. Nor do I really recommend it, LOL.

Re: the MattJ video archives - 05/25/10 02:40 PM

That's what I thought. I was taught specifically to, A) not block kicks with open hands and, B) If your opponent is standing there with open hands... kick him in the fingers. grin It's an effective technique. Especially if they've got open hands and they're holding them down by their sides like some TKD styles do. wink Some guys even wiggle their fingers down there like they're playing guitar or something. Maybe they use it as a distraction when it's illegal to kick the fingers? Bad habit from my experience. (MHO, not TKD bashing, guys)

I remember taking a roundhouse to the throat one time, too. Not fun. We did tournament sparring but most of the time for the advanced students we tried to keep it as realistic as possible. (we always stayed away from kicking the knees or doing any joint twisting tech's at full force though. Everyone's gotta get up and go to work tomorrow, right?)

HAHA I've had a couple of sparring sessions that had the same defense. Glad to see I'm not the only one!
