EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II

EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/12/06 03:04 PM
Hello All,
Anyone interested in getting together again? Probably best to start setting dates now.
The only bad times for me is the first week in February since I'll be in Savannah, GA visiting my old instructor/good friend.
So what say you East Coasters!
Kind regards,
Raul

ok i tried going to the last get together but it never happened due to miscommunication..this time i would like to make it...i live in paterson, new jersey...so hit me back with some info and place of meeting..if it ever happens

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/12/06 03:15 PM
I'm interested. The Patterson NJ location is probably a bit too far for me, though. Perhaps somewhere in PA?

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/12/06 03:26 PM
I live at the east end of Long Island.... so anywhere you nut bags are is far for me. I dont mind travelling. If it is gonna be held in PA I'd appreciate if it could be done on a Saturday or early Sunday so I can probably stay over in a hotel and then drive back.
I'm not pulling a RangerG
<I said that with love>

Sunday would be the only day I could do it.

Sounds great to me and PA definitely works, since that is my home state. In VA now..:) Weekends would be the best for me, preferably a saturday, cuz I would probably stay the night and have the family with...they could sight see why yall beat me up....

Hey Raul
I'm up for it.
PA sounds fair. Scott (Bando) said he'd like to get together again, so I'd tell him. Schanne will probably be interested.
Let's try some time in Feb. Maybe 2nd/3rd/4th w/e.
Sunday's good for me.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/12/06 07:12 PM
I love this idea ! I tried it on another board last year and was very disappointed with the responses.Glad to see it getting a better one here. First off where in PA ? Allentown is about 4 hrs for me (coming from Upstate NY). Scraton/Wilkes-Barre is about 3 3 1/2. Any where in Jersey will be between 2-3 hrs (You can make it to Patterson from York in about 3 as well, I travel it frequently). Last question, do you have a certain school in mind and how many different styles are we looking at (I find this to be the most exciting part) ? My style is TKD.

to answer your diversity question.... it is about as diverse as it comes
Okinawan Kempo
Shotokan/Judo
American Kenpo Karate
Bando
Just to name a few. Would be nice to throw a Korean martial artist in the mix.

let me know when it is, I will be interested in going. If you need a Dojo, we have a 3000 sq ft in Virginia. We also have arrangments with the Sheraton that we do business with for the fighters for our tournament.

I Want in! I live in western PA but I am all for a meeting. I have never drove anywhere far before but I am willing to try. A weekend would be good for me and even a Friday I will need to find somewhere to stay hotel/or something. Has anyone talked to RangerG I know he would be up for this. I think late feburary would be good for me. Keep me posted if this is going to happen!

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/13/06 04:36 AM
Well not sure where we can agree upon, but Allentown would work, since that is my hometown...
However, If a dojo is needed, my original school is in Brodheadsville, PA, about an hour and a half north from Allentown. I am sure I could ask my instructors if we could crash, and they won't mind..:) Either way, I am game for wherever it is..
Also, for me Allentown is about a 3 ½ to 4 hour drive from VA…So, it will be a hike for me 2..But worth it I am sure…

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/13/06 08:28 AM
Either Allentown or York look promising. MattJ, do you have a dojo in York.
Also guys, if we're going to make the trip worthwhile, I'd suggest at least 3 hours training.

Broadshead would be cool as would the Allentown area. The first weekend in Feb. is out for me though, we have our regional qualifiers for our National tourney on Feb. 4th.

MattJ will have to bring the Maple donuts and it has to be from the shop, not the stuff they sell frozen to the markets. The glazed are the best, Krispy Kreme take notice

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/13/06 11:25 AM
Being that we are getting a decent response this time around and we have many diverse groups I propose this:
After we set the location, start time, and duration... each person should dedicate about 20-30 min (more or less depending on the duration) to something specific they want to go over with the group from their art and have the group participate.... be it bag drills, bunkai, ground fighting, weapons attack/disarms, sparring drills, chokes, etc.
That way everyone gets to taste a little piece of each other's art.
We had some sort of that at the last get together with Bando and JohnL. However near the tail end it just turned into a showcase. I would rather practice what the lead is showing instead of just watching. I'm more of a physical person.
Whatcha think peeps?
My best,
Raul
I propose this as I am assuming that we are not doing a "Throwdown" sparring session.

The Way of Raul does not include watching JohnL eating a cooked meal at the sushi restaurant!

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/13/06 11:32 AM
Hey Raul
I know we talked about the format after the last session and I had the same thoughts.
The only comment I'd have is that you don't want the session to be too fragmented.
What I'd suggest is, if we're going to do about 3 hours, that we choose 3 people for about 1 hour each. That way it'll give people a bit more time to work through something. I'm not sure 20 mins would work.
Also, if those 3 people are selected, they can talk to each other to ensure the 3 hours runs as on complete session.
Just some thoughts.
Oh by the way;
Scott (Bando) says yes, depending on the date.
Gene (Kyokushinkai) who didn't make it last time is interested as well.

I know this is a quick get together, so traveling is a major factor. However, with a little long term planning, i wouldn't mind traveling farther, lets say Florida, to train.
Oh, almost forgot, I will be in Tampa, FL sometime in April. I hope to get together with some of our brethren in Florida..:)

Allentown is fine. I just have to ask my instructors or the option for a local gym or hotel conference room is a good idea to, but not sure how much that would cost...Not sure of how many will attend, but the dojo is medium size, and that it about 1600-1800 square feet approximately...

Here might be another option....JohnL and I are very friendly with Lopresti Sensei from Blackwood NJ. He has a very large dojo that is has all the accomodations including a locker room and showers. Contacted him this morning and he said he would rent us his dojo
, I still have to go over $ details but he is a very fair person. The dojo is located in South Jersey about 15-20 minutes from Philadelphia PA. The dates I will ask for are either February 19th or the 26th. If everyone is fine with the location and date I will secure the dojo. Lets talk...

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/20/06 04:34 PM
East Coast get together is on!!
Just talked with Lopresti Sensei and the 26th and time are fine.
He said the dallor amount didn't matter since we are non prophit but I believe we should offer him $ for his generocity, facility, heat, electric etc.... anyway it's only a few bucks a person , no big deal. Anyone interested should put their name up so we can keep a list. Previously we talked about having each person bring something to the event, that's a good thing but we also need to plan it out a little so when everyone arrives we don't have a cluster "f" on our hands. If your coming out of state and would rather head out Saturday to spend the night let me know and I can arrange sleeping accomadations, my wife said she would make a big dinner for the guys overnighting too. Sunday after the event there is a great sushi place we can throw down some beer and reflect on our day as well.
With everyones participation I'm sure we can make this a fun event.....let's roll!
Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, all are welcome regardless of style and rank, only request is a great attitude.

Sounds like a plan! I found Sewell on the map, and it looks like an easy trip for me.
Not sure if I am staying over or not...looks like about an hour and a half ride...so if we get done the after training party/Dinner by midnight, I should be OK to head home.
I think I will avoid the sushi as well...I had a bad experience with octopus one time. I dislike food that tries to hang onto the plate..
I will hit the MA supply place for some "interesting" items to bring for my part. Heh heh heh

Raul Perez
Ranger
Oldman
MrMoyer
Gojuwarrior1
Pohnj
Efrain
Mattj
Razorfoot

Bo-Ken
If anyone wants their name added to the list let me know. It will help determine our teaching/game plan & to make sure we don't over book the dojo as well. After we know who will attend we can figure out our plan. For instructors/BB, each player should bring something to the table, from there we can get an idea how to handle our time correctly. For example, I know Ranger has some KM expeirence therefore we can alot time for some of his techniques & instruction. It would be nice to get a wide variety of styles to broaden our MA abilities. As we get closer to the 26th everyones participation will help make it a memorable event. Email me if you would like to discuss the event off forum.

We have the dojo for four hours, the people that are involved should contact me with what you might like to show/instruct/teach so we can start to make up a schedule of who is who and what they would like to demonstrate. I think we can all agree that having some type of plan will make things run smoothly. Again... if you don't want to talk on the forum about it contact me via email.

schanne,
I'm sorry I lost track of the thread. I was considering the Southeast venue. I pretty sure Im a no show for the North east. Sorry. Unless I can do something really wonderful for my wife between now and then.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/21/06 03:31 PM
There seems to be a lot of people attending this event so I think JohnL had a good idea of having maybe 3-4 people lead the group possibly 1 hour each.
JohnL and I have very similar styles and share the same concepts regarding bunkai so I would like him to lead one of the sessions since he is a senior rank and has a lot more experience than I do. That and I find him to be a very good instructor.
If I do get a chance to display anything it would probably be the correlation between Atemi Jitsu (distracting blows that weaken the body) and Tuite Jitsu (Joint manipulation) and how it is in some of the kata.

Actually, you could be quite a help for me with the "brain trust" we will have in attendance to offer opinions and techniques. I have a real problem bucking, hooking and rolling a heavy opponent off the top of me in a grappling situation. I would rather not continue to use my patented leg-clinch "depantsing" method...people are startin to talk..

Most of the guys are BB or above but please don't let that inhibit you from coming if your interested. I rented my friends dojo in Sewell NJ where I live. Let me know if you will be attending and read over the other post, it will give you an idea what were up to.

Raul good choices, John & Matt have my nomination.
Two or three people can manage the four hours by deligating specific amount of time to groups/instructors. The "brewing process" is going on right now, I'm sure some of you guys are thinking, "I know some good MA techniques that these guys might like to see". I think I have ToddR and Glockmeister interested... That would make...4-5 of us at this point.
I only need a short time allotment for my handgun disarms (RP has seen one of these)...I also have some disarms from the back and side that control the weapon better and prevent redirection. I ordered another practice gun in case folks wanted to play around with the techniques. I figured most eveyone already had knife disarms of one sort or another. I'm flexable...whatever you folks want to do...just don't break the old man...

I have no problems with it but keep in mind one self defense technique takes about 15-20min to show, break down, have others practice minimum 3 times each and to go around and correct or answer questions on how to perform it in a group setting.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/26/06 02:09 PM
well since you asked:
I would like to go over some ground fighting stuff. More specifically mount escapes and guard passes. I only know a few of those and I'm always open to learn more of those.
Self-Defense with weapons (particularly balistics)
Sparring techniques done on the bags or two person drills. or both
Kata Bunkai from the Pinan/Heinan Katas
My main thing is I wanna do instead of watch. Also I suggest that we rotate partners or groups every hour so everyone gets a chance to basically work with everyone else.
Posted by: MattJ
Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/26/06 02:27 PM
Maybe we can set up the last hour for some sparring sessions, or other active-resistance type drills. Scope and contact levels would be arranges by each participant, so no one has to do anything they do not wish to do.
Posted by: Raul Perez
Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/26/06 02:34 PM
I honestly have no problem with it but some people have issues when the word sparring comes into the conversation. Those people will probably drop off.
Same thing happens at my dojo when we set a designated day for sparring. No one showed up except the same 3-4 people. So now we took it off the schedule and have it at random times during the week so no one knows it is comming
However I'll pack my mma gloves, shin guards, mouth piece and head guard if anyone wants to mix it up.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/26/06 02:59 PM
Hi Raul
My section will include;
Movement technique - both mechanics and in relationship to opponents.
Distance and Timing - Application of basic techniques (As you know with me, basic techniques can mean different things.) at differing distances and timings and how this relates from sparring to Self Defence.
Kata Application. - Thought I'd take a look at some parts of Bassai Dai.
95% of the work will be done in pairs. Stand up only. (I know they don't have mats at Sal's dojo and a lot of rolling on a wood floor hurts like hell.)
Just some initial thoughts.
I'm anticipating 1 - 1 1/2 hours.
(My session will involve sparring. I'm assuming light contact as I want to work on technique rather than overpowering each other. If we need to apply power, I'd use bags/mitts

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/26/06 04:42 PM
My two cents....also some people feel "uncomfortable" sparring with outsiders/different styles than what their used to and so on. Many people have never sparred anyone outside of their own dojo and are at a comfort level with those particular people. I'm with Raul if you don't want to spar fine and if you want to that good too. I'm sure there will be some guys that want to roll and do some stand up as well. I for one have a difficult time when I'm mounted and being pounded, if the guy is good I just can't seem to bump him off or roll him. I know my weaknesses and would like to work on some of those areas.
Posted by: schanne
Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 01/26/06 05:01 PM
John & Raul...Probably Ranger and I will do an hour of self defense. Techniques will include Krav Magna, I will let Ranger go more into detail about that as he posts. Various Hapkido/jujitsu wrist locks and throws from shoulder, elbow, wrist and lapel graps. Knife assaults from lunge, slash and over head strike etc.. Again we will probably demonstrate and have everyone pair up, practice each technique and answer questions. If we only have an hour were going to have to break it down to about ten minutes per technique. We will critique all this as we get closer to our day. Can't wait to learn some KM!!!!

You and I both my friend...this is an area I wish to work on as well...
As far as sparing goes...being out of your comfort zone is not a bad thing.. I'm sure that guy who is about to attack and rob you and your better half is not in your comfort zone either..
All that said...I do wish to avoid JohnL's wrist locks...searing agony is not one of my hobbies...

EVERYONE SPARS. NO ONE GETS OUT ALIVE.
OK, kidding.
I was just thinking that we could reserve a bit of time for sparring and/or resistance drills for those that wish to. I will defer to majority rule at that time, however. Or not.

The sparring I mentioned in my post will need cooperation from both if it's going to work in the way it should. There won't be a problem. I've done some of this work with people before and it works well.
It'll be tightly controlled and I never have a porblem.
Raul and others who have worked with me before understand the level of contact I tend to work with.

OK since I'm on vacation I've had some time to think about the demo.
I'll start off with a 10 min discussion regarding Tuite and Atemi Jitsu.
I'll demonstrate 3-4 basic tuite and atemi and have the group break off into partners after each demonstration to try it.
I'll then do 2-3 intermediate tuite and atemi with the same format.
The section could take about 1 hour.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/08/06 11:35 AM
c'mon we can't roll on the hardwood floor??
Edited for excessive use of graemlins
Wow, now you guys are limited our use of the faces? Man, what is the world coming too. If ya don't want us to use them, then don't have them available. Or was the edit a joke?
And back to the post.I learned initially on concrete, then hard wood and finally tatme (sp) mats. So,I am sure hardwood won't be a problem.
(I hope that the face wasn't overkill..)

Matt, talked with Sal Lopresti (Sensei) and he said we didn't owe him anything. Although....I don't feel comfortable just barrowing such a nice facility therefore as JohnL stated way back we should give him $200.00 That would only be about $10.00 per person....what a deal for the good time you will probably have.
We have the dojo from 12:00 to 4:00 Sunday February 26th
Picture below is Sal & Paul Lopresti Sensei, I'm sure he will be there if you would like to talk with him, super nice guy!
http://www.shotokankaratejutsu.com/aboutjitsu.htmlMy friends, here is the best picture of the dojo I could find. This was taken while JohnL and I were training under Hanshi Patrick McCarthy, as you can tell he is the big guy doing all the choking and PP.

Why?
I thought the whole idea in a short space of 4 hours was to learn and or impart whatever useful knowledge / advice you can or have; not to kick and punch mitts and shields, which you should have already done or being doing back in your own dojo? It'll be a great waste of time and resources to do these in such a get together of people who have been kicking and punching mitts for at least 15 years and more?

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/15/06 11:17 PM
I think we need to restate that everyone would be welcome, no matter their level of training. I suspect what ever plan is made in advance, that it may change somewhat depending on the people that show.
I would not wish Mr. Moyer, nor anyone else to feel intimidated by what is intended to be a friendly and informative get together.

Mr. Moyer.
I thought my little misunderstood piece was TO ENCOURAGE newbies to go?
Where else will a newbie have 4 hours with people who have a quarter century of MA experience behind them? Is it not be a grand waste of time to kick bags? I'll be happy to just stand around and watch.
I would even suggest that the half-hearted customary warm up be dispensed with

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/16/06 07:41 AM
It wasn't necessarily about just kicking bags/pads. I may have interpreted the post incorrectly, but it came off as this get together wouldn't be for the novice. I wouldn't want anytone to think that. Where i don't have a quarter century of experience, I do have about a decade and a coat of rust
In any event, I think it will be a great time, because up until I gave Krav Maga a shot, I limited myself by not training with other people and their arts. I am really looking forward to it.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/16/06 07:43 AM
That is a good question. I was thinking of just wearing the gi pants...

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/16/06 08:31 AM
Hi Moyer
I wear a gi when training. Only because the way I train, if you don't your clothes will probably get ripped.
On the last get together, Scott just wore sweats and it was fine, but as the stuff I'm going to be going over will be more "alive" this time if you don't use a gi, bring a good supply of T shirts that you don't mind getting torn apart.
Also, what I'll be going over will work equally well with either advanced or novices.

I am no expert on get-togethers, MA related or otherwise, but, throwing all modesty out the window, may I humbly suggest that the pattern to follow be K.I.C.K.
K = Kata (comparative demo; bunkai; guidance for newbies on PP)
I = Individual Preference on sparring tactics.
C = Combat (the bloody nose section)
K = Knowledge (stand-around yapping; war & peace stories; etc, etc.)
AND, while others have gone to wash their noses, the young ones can hit the bags

well, back from the get together. It was a blast, not everyone showed, but it was still a good time. JohnL hogged all the time up! But it was very good what he was teaching, so we didnt mind. Then schanne took the show for a while with some self defense which was intresting. Than RangerG showed a few defenses against knives and guns (schanne helped out with that). Poor raul didnt have time to show much, time flew by!
We didnt have time to spar
which made me upset but oh well. I had a good time, these guys were very good MA's. I hope to do it again soon. There will be pictures comming soon! i have some film, i have to find out to load it on hear, be back soon.

Everybody was awesome! Had a great time. JohnL covered a lot of material that I have never seen, so I walked away with some new moves that my classmates will not be expecting. Schanne went into self defense that also covered new ground for me. I did get to see some handgun and knife disarms that varied from mine..this is always a good thing. Even got a little teaching time of my own in, and I want to thank everyone for not laughing
We got to rotate around between different partners, so I had to contend with folks other than MattJ. Matt has been adding some ground skills behind my back it seems.... I did get quite a few pictures, and as soon as I get them hosted and figure out how to link them here, you will get to see MattJ twisted up into a pretzel..the look on his face is priceless

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/26/06 07:44 PM
Hi guys. Just got back from the get together, tired but pumped at the same time. I had a really great time, and everyone there was extremely cool. Some quick highlights:
*JohnL is an excellent teacher, and completely changed my impression of what people can do with Shotokan. He worked different concepts that were straight out of the Wing Chun stuff I was going to show, as well as some stuff similar to AKK. Really excellent.
*I feel really sorry for someone that draws a knife or gun on RangerG - he is relentless!!! Scary!!!
*Raul Perez - very knowledgeable, and not above getting dirty to prove it. He and I rolled a match at the end of class, and despite a very nice reversal (if I do say so myself
), and a collar choke attempt on my part, Raul almost got a better choke on me, and then tapped me with a nice arm bar when I attempted to stack him to break his choke. Props bro!!
*Gojuwarrior1 is a muscular, scary dude! His technique is very powerful.
*Schanne is a very knowledgeable guy, too. His skills with stand-up grappling and ground stuff was quite impressive. He showed a couple of really cool leg locks that I wished we had more time to work on!
Unfortunately, no stand up sparring for liability reasons, but at least we got a couple rounds of free-grappling. JohnL worked a top control drill with me that pretty much told me that my shrimping skills blow.
Now, I know the question that everyone is waiting to hear:
Did MattJ break anyone's nose?Sadly, the answer is no. I did give JohnL a pretty good fat lip during one of the grappling drills, however. So we can all feel good about that.
I have a group photo that my dinosuar dial-up will not let me upload. I will put them on as soon as I can, hopefully the other guys can put up some, too. RangerG took a bunch.
Now, if anyone needs me, I will be whimpering softly in the corner about how sore my wrist is!

Yea, JohnL put all his weight on you. I thought you were going to pop! Its a shame we couldn't spar, i would have loved to get beat up on some more
. I don't think JohnL or schanne liked me too much, because they sure were pickin' on me. I took the fun away from everyone else!
I would love to get together with any of you guys again, you were all very knowledgeable and kind, the way all martial artists should be. This venue should definitely be every 6 months or so, it was great! Hope the others enjoyed their sushi

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/26/06 09:39 PM
I have a suggestion... the pictures are much larger than they need to be. this is due to the resolution, size and/or compression settings.
I'll give an example...the first pic was almost 3Meg!
here's the same pic as converted:
Now it's size is 35k (1/10th)
http://www.geocities.com/nthdegree_news/NE06/so the problem is your bandwith is getting eaten up from the pics being so big.

Great pics guys and sounds like a good time. I wish I was closer so I could have attended ... very jealous. Thanks Ed for the pic conversion. I clicked to download the first 7 and with Shaw's Super High Speed Cable it took just over 8 minutes for them all at full resolution. Plus I had to disable some features as my computer didn't like the Sendover site. My brother-in-law is a computer geek so set up my system to not allow things or spiders to come in and check things out. I got them but wow ... too long. Understandable though as they said they were new at it and I'm just glad they they put them up here to get. By the way Ed, are you using an internal or external program to convert these to smaller files? You can PM me so as not to take away from this good thread ... thanks.
Again jealous but can't wait to hear more stories and see more pics.

Hey Guys
Had fun!
Terry slept all the way back to North NJ due to Steve's wife Cathy plying the poor guy with drinks. (Shame on you Cathy!!!)
Saw a couple of the posts and can't believe the whinging!
Gojuwarrior;
I wouldn't have had to hog the time if the simple instruction to move one foot and then the other hadn't caused you to fall flat on your a$$ every time you tried to do it.
As for the uke bit. I hit 50 this year, am folically challenged and what's left is grey. If a young, muscular, conditioned guy like you can't handle a ditthering old guy holding your hand, I don't know what the world's coming to.
And as for the complaints by Matt;
Matt is clearly a wimp. I was holding Matt gently by the hand and applying hardly any pressure to it. Matt insisted in trying to levitate his body off the floor which simply meant that the choke from my spindly old legs went a bit deeper into his neck.
You may notice in the photo Matt's other hand, desparately trying to find something to tap. If he'd wave'd it around any more, we would have both taken off.
As for the expression on Matt's face, there's a simple explanation;
"Who's your Daddy Matt? Come on now, who's your Daddy?"
Had a great time with everyone.
Met good people, had a few beers, good food, and even got some training in. How good does life get.

Standard shotokan stuff.
Linear, rigid, stiff, punching kicking and blocking.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/27/06 10:32 AM
JohnL started off showing us some footwork drills, which became a partner drill in maintaining proper distance.
He then showed us a "sensitivity" drill, where you had to keep the back of your hand touching your partner's, the idea being to (again) maintain distance as your partner moved around. Then we did it with one person closing their eyes! This excercise reminded me very much of Chi Sao practice from Wing Chun.
Lots of circular footwork in these drills, and with the sensitivity drill, it seemed more like KungFu than Shotokan.
He also showed us some kata applications against kick defenses, and even grappling stuff! JohnL knows his stuff.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/27/06 11:44 AM
Wow! It looks like a lot of good training and ideas were swapped around. Sorry I missed it. I hope MattJ explained my sitch to everyone. My son was scheduled to be with his mom on Sunday but do to some poor planning on her part, our schedule got mixed up. It meant that I had the pleasure of my son's company on Sunday but that I would not be able to attend due to the fact that he is only 8.
It turned out to be a good thing I didnt chance bringing him up with me because he wound up having a flu-like virus all day Sunday. He was in and out of the bathroom every ten minutes and was miserable all day, the poor little guy.
I will be sure to catch the next one.

*Raul Perez - very knowledgeable, and not above getting dirty to prove it.
Oh that is just MattJ's way of saying I'm a dirty hispanic!
Here's my rendition:
JohnL - As always a great orator and has many techniques similiar to my own as far as bunkai. His exercise of eliminating the sight so your opponent can't "lie" to you visually was a lot of fun and I have a feeling that some will use that in their next class. As always JohnL uses his "Im old excuse" and expects the younglings to take it easy on him.... and then he forcefully punches someone in the jaw and elbows others in the molar notch. Yeah He's a real class act!!!
MattJ - Didnt do too much with Matt besides rolling one match. To his defense He did catch me off balance and reversed my mount into a guard. AND he even broke my guard TWICE. But I somehow was able to catch a cross collar choke that sunk over his mouth and took the arm he gave me when he tried to get out of it. The match could have gone either way though.
I was looking forward to seeing some AKK and Wing Chun but JohnL stole the spot light too long which left no time for Matt or myself to demonstrate our styles(NEXT TIME MATTJ!)
RangerG - As always an intense figure and as forceful as they come with regards to gun and knife fighting. He showed some excellent knife and gun disarms on me to the group which left my arm, hand and soul hurting
It's funny. He acts like such a gentle soul until the weapons come out! Then he gets this look in his eye and fire and brimstone falls from the ceiling, The sun became black, and locusts started to pour in from the windows! I'm convinced the only way to defeat him is with a young priest and an old priest... The Power of Christ Compells YOU!!!
GojuWarrior1 - What can I say about him that hasnt been already said. Well for one, we share the same hair cut Great guy to meet and train with. Schanne had us practice a "fireman's" throw which I just couldn't do. GojuW hit like 3 nice ones on me in a row! My back hit flat, the air thrusted out of my lungs at the speed of sound... and all I could say was... "Nice do it again". Maybe I'm a borderline massachist?!
GojuW's brother was also a good sport! Did a ground drill with him and gave him a tip on how to adjust his positioning to counter an opponent from getting up from being side mounted. He picked it up instantly and was doing it better than I could
JohnP - One of JohnL's students/classmates... Always nice to work with him and hang with him. A very modest person but has strong potential to be a very accomplished Martial Artist. We did a few drills with our eyes closed together and we rolled near the end of class. I caught mount and arm barred him but it was a struggle the whole time... HE's TOUGH for a purple belt!
Terry - One of JohnL's friend/classmate - quite possibly the happiest person on the planet. Always smiling and always happy to meet and train with everyone there. He actually trained in Ryukyu Kempo for a bit so we exchanged ideas, Oyata stories, and I showed him some of the Bo Kata during the 10 min intermission. I was about to roll with him but time ran out when we were about to roll... it actually went like this.. "OK you ready?!" "Times UP Fellas!!"
During our dinner which me, JohnL, Schanne, Terry, JohnP, and Schanne's wife Cathy attended.... Terry had told us that he acts on the side and was actually in a B rated MA Movie! I forget the name of it though but it is actually in Hollywood video according to him. I'm all about renting it as soon as I can remember the name... JohnL a little help here!
The Korean Girl - Schanne's classmate that showed up for about 1 1/2 hours. Really nice girl and technically sound. According to Schanne her brother is the head body guard to the South Korean President! Not to mention that her family lives and breathes Traditional TKD as there are about 27 black belts in the family!
I worked with her on JohnL's Bassai Sho bunkai. Gave her a little advice here and there and then BAM I'm on my back! She soaked up everything I was saying like a sponge. Her husband was there observing. Came a point where I swept her in the bunkai and she fell into my arms.... looked up at her husband at the same time that happened and I got the ICY STARE! I can't help it if I'm a Sexy B!tch LOL
Last but never least... Schanne - First of all Schanne saved me from terrible directions from Map Quest. I met him at his house and him and his family were super duper nice and offered me a room for the night since I wasn't leaving that day due to a 3 1/2 hour drive home.
He demonstrated a lot of self defense techniques, joint locks, and ground fighting applications. He's nimble for a big guy!
After the get together and dinner we went back to his house and kept drinking and posting pictures. His son and daughter are awesome and so polite!
His wife (Cathy) is such a sweethart and cooked us the best homefries I've ever tasted in my life! Dude... give me the recipe!!!
After our hung over stooper we ventured out into his huge back yard and swapped Bo katas. He found out how endless the Oyata Bo Kata is! He then showed me the Yamaguchi Bo Kata. Although it is not as long the hand changes and manipulations are awesome! I then showed him Kuniyoshi No Sai Kata and we went over it for about 30 minutes.
I bid my farewell at noon and headed back to the big NY. Schanne... all I can say is this bro:
My best,
Raul
PS
RangerG and GojuWarrior1 - whats the dilly on your pictures?! Upload them and post em already!

Yeah, I agree with Raul. I did some top control drills with him, and the first one he rolled me off in like 15 seconds. Second one I was much more attentive, and managed to (barely) keep it. Tough dude, and real nice guy.

I got to work with Terry a bit. SUPER nice guy, like Raul said, with a perpetual friendly smile on his face. Very fast hands and clean technique from what I saw. The founder of his style was good friends with Ed Parker, so our styles have some similarities. Really great guy.

Re: EAST COAST GET TOGETHER PART II - 02/28/06 02:08 PM
It is amazing how fast four hours passes when your having a great time. I want to thank everyone for making the event fun, interesting and educational. The time we spent together was long enough for me to know that each one of you are true Martial Artists, I'm proud to know each of you and consider your friendship important. Personally, I had a great time, the pictures tell a thousand words.
The feeling from the rest of the guys is we would like to get together again in the summer.... soooooo I would enjoy hosting an "East Coast Get Together 3" at the "Schanne Shack". Hopefully Raul, JohnL, Matt & GojuW can help me organize the event. This time it will be an outside all day training event (SHUGYO). The guys can vauch that there is plenty of room to train and play. We will supply lunch & diner ( Raul, Cathy will cook her famous potatoes just for you
) and a pool party that evening.
Everyone is welcome, which I now know means if 25 people say there coming, twelve show up. We will keep you posted as the summer gets closer.
To all that came to the event...
