In general I learned a little more about Singapore's culture and armed forces today because it's National Day here.

In terms of MA, I learned a little about what it means to be realistic in my approach to SD.

Re: What did you learn today? - 08/09/05 04:08 PM

What did I learn today? I learned that a fellow employee will be leaving and she'll be missed.

I learned that a fellow employee who is also a martial artist has to wait for 3 months like myself to be able to get an MRI so that we can see a specialist to fix the problems. (Her leg injury due to sparring in Germany 2 weeks ago; me two crushed vertibrea in neck)

I learned that I'm missing my training and that I'm going next week no matter what pain I'm in. I'll just have to learn my limitations.

I learned that though I can't be all that I can be until after my surgery that today I am better off then most and I should be thankful. And that I will work with the limitations I have as later it will make me a better person.

I've learned that because of the Kick/Punch/Rape thread that I'm angry that this happens and fear more for my wife and daughter more then anything else.

I've learned again how useful this forum is and how thankful that there are such a wide variety of people on it that share many of the same interests. Thanks

I learned that alot of people care about me no matter how prideful and pigheaded I am.

I learned that The ring girls that work the 'Hook n Shoot' MMA promoted Fight nights in FL and GA are significantly hotter than the UFC girls (got a couple of dvd's for my birthday).

I learned that to comment on this to my wife is a mistake

I learned that apples taste indescribably better picked fresh off a tree in the countryside than bought from a shop.

I learned that Citroen Berlingo vans do not handle well during hand-brake turns.

I learned that male dogs give can give themselves sexual pleasure using their paw.

I think thats about it.

Continuing in word play of this nature will lead to corruption of the lyrics of 'The Bear Necessities'

The dog in question was my In-Laws new French Bulldog. By a quirk of the breed neither the b1tche$ or Dogs can reach their privates with their mouths. I walked in on 'Gus' (for that is the little sleaze-beast's name) having a 'special moment'. It looked for all the world like he was strumming an air-guitar!!

You were one of the people I was thinking of when I wrote part of my learned items. My injuries can be fixed ... hopefully ... and were made by myself with an unfortunate fall on my head and shoulder. Yours hit you without warning and you could do nothing to hinder it. Again mine and other's wishes go to you in your fight ... and why it puts other small things into a better light.

I learned (once again) that you can't beat yourself up and over-analyze everything, whether in MA or in life (because of analysis paralysis: you literally hit a point where you're scared to do anything).

I realized (thanks to this forum) that I have to stop comparing myself to the other people in my class, and compete against myself.

I learned hook kick, a new combination, ridgehand (with the forward hand), and jump spin hook kick. Interesting, frustrating stuff, but I love it .

well, it's only like 3:52 and for today i havn't learned much yet but on a small note i have learned that on these kind of forums and in life there's people that no matter what you say they will only focus on the part of that they don't like and be mean to you because of it and no matter how many times you point out the rest of what you said and that you didn't even write what they said they will still not understand because they are closedminded or at least for that moment they are. i've learned that people will only see what they want to see no matter what is there in front of them. and i've learned that alot of people in the world are brain washed to think how other people want them to in one way or another.

That no-one at vodafone knows what they are doing wrt smartphone setups.

My wonderful new imate smartphone SP3 popped its clogs on monday and I've spent the last couple of days trying to get it to hook up to my server and collect my email from work.

So now I've spent a total of ???!! hours trying to find ppl who know how to set up vpn over gprs on a smartphone mobile using windows mobile 2003 and activesync.

I got it surfing the net ok after recreating all the gprs setups from scratch, but it just wont hook up, I know I've prob left a tick off somewhere or put the wrong thing in one of the boxes..... its so frustrating!

Today I downloaded all the new software and gave it a hard boot plus installed a whole lot of new CAB files which have fixed the remaining problem for the wap. Then updated activesync all to no avail.

Problem is that the guy who set it up has left and no-one knows what he did. As I'd only had it a couple of days neither did I.

    * It's illegal to re-post e-material even free articles unless you use the original link...I didn't know that and got a slap on the wrist today.
    * some people on this forum are apparently fluent in pre-20th century Korean language and regularly converse at their dojang...I mean dochang... with no linguistic influences from China and/or Japan over the past 100 years. amazing. It's as cool as being able to speak Klingon.

I learned that when your instructor pays you a compliment in front of the whole class don't let it go to your head.

I learned that when kicking paddles that they are meant more for speed and not for power. And when one is out of reach don't try to over extended to get it.

Short Story: Working with partners and paddles. Firt round houses across the dojang and back and then switch. Second front round houses across dojang and back and then switch ... and so on until get to doubles across the dojang and back. On the way there the Instructor points out how extremely well I'm doing and says can't believe the improvement from 3 years ago. Then on the way back he then points out the snap and power I have. THEN Mr. Ego gets a big head and starts kicking them faster and harder and gets to the second last one and reaches for a paddle just out of reach and then "POP". Stop ... look at partner ... ask if they heard the noise ... confirmed ... go to kick again and leg gives out. Believe it to be a hyper extended knee ... been out 3 weeks and went back to class last night with a knee brace on. Can walk ... no prob ... can jog ... no prob ... run; discomfort and ackward ... pivot ... OUCH!

Thank you Sharon, for reminding me why I am here.

The lessons I learned in life were that people could not be trusted. That men...hurt you. That everyone you love...will abandon you. That life is about being hungry, defensive, not trusting...about getting, and guarding what you have.

My (limited) martial arts experience has completely upset the early life lessons that I lived by. I try now to be open, to find people that I can share things with...and to trust. Every so often, that trust is violated but it reminds me of what I want to change.

So, thank you for being open and sharing (even if only for a moment. )

So, thank you for being open and sharing (even if only for a moment. )

I have learned that people on a forum who have never met each other before in life can welcome complete strangers into their homes just from on line conversations and have some of the best times of their lives getting to know them.

We would never think to do something like this from any other on line meeting with a stranger but here, we feel safe enough to invite other forum members into our homes.

Some have even been given international invitations and accepted to meet, train, and swap techniques without the slightest worry or concern for their personal wellbeing or safety.

Either we are simply very trusting or we feel like everyone here, who is a long term poster, is almost family.

    Thoughts...

I learned a new word today; ambivalent.

    Dictionary: Exhibiting or feeling ambivalence.

    Ambivalence meaning:

    1. The coexistence of opposing attitudes or feelings, such as love and hate, toward a person, object, or idea.

    2. Uncertainty or indecisiveness as to which course to follow.

I guessed as a much due to the context but just another word I can add to my vocabulary to make me sound smarter.

    Thats awesome, Mark!

Its always a wonderful feeling when someone lets you know how much they appreciate what you do.

Earlier this week, I along with several other higher ranking students were called to help work one on one with the students in one of the kids classes. I was given the first choice as to which student I wanted to work with. Hands went up all over the place and one student goes "Pick me! Pick me! You're my favorite!" I nearly turned into a blubbering idiot in front of the whole class.

As for what I learned today? I taught myself Ge-Baek, my next pattern.

Olga, that's not fair. You knocked the poor guy out! Let him wake up first.

I learned that too! And I also learned that pre-ordering it now would make me too much of a nerd, according to my co-workers.

(But I already knew that. )

I've learned today that my professor is a complete ass and doesn't return my emails for some reason. See if he gets a good report from me at the end of the semester.

What did I LEARN today? Same as always: nothing.

By the time I almost get the hang of the variation of the moment, they move on to something else.

I learned long ago the fun is in the trying.

That regardless of what plans you make for the future, things change. Often times for the best, even though you can not grasp it now.

I found out that by doing the 1040 long form instead of the 1040EZ I'll be getting back an extra $255 this year!!

And that both my fiance's and my tax refunds added to what we already have saved will more than pay for our honeymoon!!

Congrats Joel! Getting money back is always a good thing. I'm just too lazy to do it myself so I hire a CPA to do it. He's good and gets all the money back he can for us. Well worth the money we spend for him. With our return (we haven't filed yet but we get a return every year) we plan to get a good washer and dryer. If we have money left over then we plan to also get a new fridge. Well we'll see how much we'll get back from Uncle Sam before we make more plans. Don't want to count our chickens before they hatch.

I learned a new weather term: 'ice pellets'.

snow/ice/hail? rolled all in one tight package.

with 35mph winds the ice pellets made it feel like a sand storm.

    ...perfect outdoor training weather for conditioning! who's with me!!!!..... {Ed almost runs outside, and thinks quick - "damn, I cramped up. you guys g'ahead."}

Today I learned that a 25 pound 2 year old can turn in to a 50 pound 2 year old after being packed around all over the USS Lexington for 4 hours. Man my arms, back and legs are sore!

Family wisdom teaches you 'not to go to bed angry.' Today I learned that even a bird knows how to end the day.

Quote: Even up through last week, Alex was working with Dr. Pepperberg on compound words and hard-to-pronounce words. As she put him into his cage for the night last Thursday, she recalled, Alex looked at her and said: “You be good, see you tomorrow. I love you.”

He was found dead in his cage the next morning, Dr. Pepperberg said.

That as I have gotten older, I have become a much more tolerant and forgiving person but there are still one or two things that can set me off.
