Gender ratio poll

Gender ratio poll - 07/31/05 10:00 PM

I can't find this info in past threads (apologies if it has been asked before).

I understand that MA appeals to few females, and certain arts seem to have a higher male:female ratio. Would interested folks please post the adult gender ratio in their dojos, and the art? (Not kid classes, or adults that take private lessons only.)

Thank you.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 07/31/05 10:21 PM

At my current dojo there are four students that come on a regular basis (me and three other people) all female. Usually class is just us four and some kids. There is one adult male that I have seen in class twice, the two Sensei's are male.

At my dojang in Toronto the split is pretty much 50-50.

In my undergraduate program, in my year, of 110 students, there are 5 females (me and four others). So the balance at my dojang seems better then what it probably is :P

When I was in American kenpo approx. 75% men.

Current JKD school, approx. 95% men.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 08/01/05 12:22 AM

Besides the ratio at any given time, it is also meaningful to see the ratio of long-stayers.

My view is males tend to stay around longer. The early drop out rate among females is high.

Of the dozen adults I saw the last time I attended class, two of them were women.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 08/01/05 03:50 AM

Beginners in schools I've been in are roughly 50-50 split. However as you go up the ranks, the number of women decreases quite a bit.

I'd say that there are more women by ratio in TKD than Jujutsu from my experiences.

At my dojo I think the ration women is about 1/4 or 1/3 (including myself).

Re: Gender ratio poll - 08/01/05 10:57 AM

I have about 20 students in all and of those 12 are male, 8 are female. The highest grade in the class is a male 1st kyu next is a female 3rd kyu. After that the females are generally the higher ranked. I tend to find that although as a rule the females tend to drop out more, they are generally quicker learners and usually have much, much better co-ordination to begin with.
Oh, karate class, BTW.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 08/01/05 03:31 PM

In my American Kenpo school, it's currently adult females, 2 (two women being away, one in the Navy and one on medical leave.)

Adult males: 5, but only one attending regularly. (One absentee has gone home for the summer from college, one's a law enforcement officer whose schedule is errratic, the other two seem to be AWOL.

By my obeservation, the drop-out rates seem similar between males and females, but the females seem to drop out sooner. The guys will often give it more of a chance before leaving.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 08/01/05 04:20 PM

In the beginners class in my karate school, there might actually be more girls than guys, but the guys seem to come more often. But in the intermediate class, there's more guys (possibly because this is when my school starts us sparring, and I've talked to alot of other girls and women who get really apprehensive about sparring, so maybe they just quit). Then it evens out again in the advanced class. Actually, I'd say one of the school's best students is a 14-year-old girl (who is amazingly dedicated and has been doing martial arts for most of her life). Both of my main instructors are male. It's pretty even, I'd say.

About 25% female, but when I taught a kickboxing class to get in shape 100% female cool.

I know you didn't want numbers on private students, but I thought mine would be statistically significant.

I have 24 students. All train with me privately/semi privately.

11 are women.

And a very nice one; except that your enthusiasm shows -- "ration women?" I think the question is about 'regular' women

Thanks, everyone, for replying. From what I have read on this topic over the years, the ratio sounds higher than what it was in the past.

BuDoc: thanks for contributing. I didn't mean to discount the private lessons...just trying to keep it simple. I suspect your high female student count probably due to your teaching ability. That, or your dashing nature.

We have about 40-50% women in our adult group but only about 10-15% in the junior section.

We are basically a goju derivative but specialise in a lot of weapons and some BJJ style grappling.

IOW a bit of something for everyone!

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/23/05 05:31 PM

Good question...can't count exactly but I'm sure there are more males than females in my dojo. I can only talk about the intermediates (4th kyu green to 1st kyu brown) because the whites, yellows and oranges train at a separate time.

In my class there are some four girls including me and some seven or eight guys. (These are the regulars. There would be more guys if some of the ones who've seemed to have left/taken a break came back.) My chief instructor is male (8th dan) and I have two other instructors, one a male sandan and the other a female nidan.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/23/05 05:57 PM

Around 1/3 female, although this is not representative of the system as a whole which is more like 10 or 15% female with the top ranks being held by men. This class has more women, I think, because one of the senseis is female.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/23/05 05:58 PM

I do karate. In the adult class it's probably 50:50 overall. Of the black belts 5 males and 3 females. Kids 50:50 but more of the higher ranks are guys.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/23/05 06:06 PM

70% male to 30% women over all for the school. How many show up to each class I go varies. I have been there when it was half and half and gone when no women show up and any where in between. The day classes that I have gone to however is mostly women which is nice as you can then train with the Instructor one on one for partnering drills.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/24/05 08:01 AM

In our Karate class there are about 15 - 20 males and 1 female. (average class size about 6-10)
In the kickboxing class there are about 12 males and 2 females.

I always thought that our dojo was really small and hardly had any members, but it seems that it is about average size from what I have read.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/24/05 08:42 PM

In our HKD dojang, the majority of the begginners are women, than as the ranks get higher, the testing gets harder, the ranks thin (male and female)! The HKD we learn as compared to others is really hard, I see TKD sites and think man they got it easy. I suppose we are trained by the military so it would be alot harder than a general public class!

I am ashamed to say that there are no female black belts in HKD. We try to encourage them, but it is harder for women to find time for serious training....with the children, the responsibilities of the home, job, husbands etc.
We still live in a very traditional society and everyone has there place, unfortunately the place of the women is not in the dojang!!

Now before any one goes off, I dont believe this to be right , my wife is about to start and I support her, and I think that the fact that no BB exist is driving her to make history. Unfortunately she just had a caesarian birth so she needs to rest up for at least a year!I try to involve my female friends and relatives, but they buy into the traditional role idea as well! Oh well this will all change one day hopefully! Women need to take self defense classes more than men do, they are attacked more than men are. Men attack men for stupid reasons, men attack women for different reasons and women need to kick some tail, to get some respect!!

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/25/05 06:15 PM

Why is it that the gender that most needs "self defense" training isn't hitting up those gyms more so then us big-headed, testosterone filled guys? It's a shame.

In my boxing gym years ago we had one female student, and one asst. to the instructor. The female student was great too ..man she was quick.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/25/05 06:18 PM

I don't know Ket ... maybe more guys are doing it because they are the ones feeling threated and "maybe" some women feel that their man will protect them or that it will never happen to them. Or maybe martial arts is a stereotype by some women that it is for men because it involves sweating, punching, kicking ad rolling around on the ground. Good question.

And to stay on topic. The old Dojo in CA I was in, was a little under half. Mainly because when I joined my partner in crime at the time (girlfriend) joined as well. When a Dojo has one Femme in it, more come. If there are only males... Its a less inviting environment for other females to practice in.

A good fighting length for nails is @ 1/8" or 2mm. Any longer and they will tear off.

in the dojo i'm in now there are about 12 females and about as many guys, maybe a couple more depending on attendance.

there is also the bursar lady who doesn't actually participate but seems to know loads about karate. last week she sat and corrected my pinan nidan which was scary when she piped up with something like 'you need to straiten your shoulders on that block, and its two knife hand attacks'.

Re: Gender ratio poll - 11/28/05 12:04 PM

Nails are good as Harlan said only in short distances. You have to actually (if you plan on doing a lot of gouging scratching, as are some strikes in Gung-Fu's focus) strengthen your nails through diet. Conditioning doesn't work on your nails do to the nature of their formation.

I've seen people pull fake nails out of their neck before, it didn't do that much damage. I've seen the face of an rapist who was attempting to assault one of our girls at the dojo... *grimaces* Short nails, Palm strike to nose, followed by rake to the eyes... Its a simple technique taught everywhere... ow...

I'm the highest ranking female (not that I'm bragging so I don't want to come off as being such) and the instructor's daughter is the second highest. Hello Harlan:

Kara-te probably on average 25-30% depending on a million different factors both known and unknown. Some classes have far far more women than that while others have slightly less

But the CLEAR majority of classes we run won't fit your core criteria. In terms of pure numbers the majority of classes/programs are under 18 years of age...

Long thread...I had to check back to see what 'criteria' you refered to. I think the reason I excluded kids classes was because I suspect most kids are forced to go. I was interested in the ratio of men/women that get to MA and make the assumption that all of them want to be there.
